Station tour of WBNS given by KD8TIZ.
Summary by Bob – W3HKK
Today, members of our club were treated to an outstanding, nearly 3 hour in depth tour of the WBNS TV/radio studios, and transmitter sites, near downtown Columbus.
Kudos go to Bob (TIZ) for getting us in, organizing, leading the caravan, and hosting the tour. The group saw so much and asked so many questions that time flew by. We all gained new appreciation for what it takes to keep such a complex and important community resource on the air, and for the team of dedicated professionals who have that responsibility.
Although we didn't get to actually climb the TV tower, or ride the elevator to the top, we did inspect the tower base up close, including extensive lightning protection, tower guys and counter guys, falling ice protection, bonding and grounding, as well as the multiple TV and radio transmitters, wave guides, phasing hardware, backup power ( two independent utility feeds plus the on-site generators and UPS systems. They even have a collection of vacuum tubes from a variety of manufactures.
WBNS staff were very welcoming, patient, and incredibly informative on this highly educational tour.
COOKEN ARC extends its sincere appreciation to Bob and the staff at WBNS for their kindness and hospitality.
