Why I Sponsor Children...50 years later
Why I Still Sponsor Children...Fifty Years Later
Since I started sponsoring children almost 50 years ago when I was in high school, I wanted to share why I've been doing child sponsorship all of my adult life. We have three sponsored children, one in Ecuador, and two in Mexico.
What can I say about child sponsorship? It's one of the best ways to make an impact for eternity in a child's life. For $38.00 a month, approximately the cost of 1 tank of gas, or one nice meal out for two, or seven mochas from a coffee shop, I can change a child's life forever. But I don't just send money; I receive letters and drawings from my sponsored children throughout the year. Ismael in Mexico writes, "I pray for you; for God to bless you more." They love getting the photos of our family that I send. Do you see the trade off? You make the financial commitment and show some interest in that child and pray for him or her and a child halfway around the world will be praying for you! It brings me much joy to see that our children are continuing the tradition of sponsorship by sponsoring one to three children of their own as well. It's my dream to be able to visit at least one of our sponsored children before they are grown up.
Recently Rich and I heard a pastor share at a leadership conference that he sat next to an accountant on an airplane trip, and that person's job was to audit or check the finances of many different Christian organizations. This pastor tried to get him to tell him any bad news about any organizations, but the only thing the accountant would tell him after much questioning is that "My wife and I sponsor a child through Compassion International."
We've had multiple children through the years, as they grow up or sometimes move away from the project, and others take their places, but the two-way benefits remain the same. Remember the words of our Lord Jesus in Matthew 25:40 and 45, "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" and "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me." God will provide the resources for you; you just need to be the channel through which it flows. It's your opportunity to be a global Christian!!

Ditto. My sponsorship is extreme joy. I just received a letter from my girl in Africa. She thanked me for her birthday and Christmas gifts. She told me she was able to purchase shoes, dress, and food. What a good feeling it gives me.
