THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH

THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH

Antinomians: Christians who hold that faith renders the Christian free from obligation to obey the moral law will often quote this verse:

Galatians 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but FAITH WHICH WORKETH BY LOVE.

We have been warned that wicked men wrest the words of Paul to their own destruction.  (II Peter 3:)  Therefore, a correct understanding of Galatians 5:6 must agree with these two other statements of Paul:

1 Corinthians 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but THE KEEPING OF THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD.

Galatians 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but A NEW CREATURE.

"Faith that worketh by love...keeping the commandments...a new creature"  are all referring to the same thing.  If we do not obey the Commandments of God, then we are not a new creature nor do we have a faith that worketh by love.

Jews and Gentiles must have faith which worketh by love.  The scriptures define how to love God --and if we love God-- we will love our neighbor as well:

"For this is the LOVE of God, that we keep His Commandments." RSV

"He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who LOVES Me." RSV

"If you LOVE Me, you will keep My commandments."  John 14:15 RSV

To become a new creature depends upon the obedience of faith.

"Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH: To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen."
Romans 16:25-27
