THE BIRD WITH THE BROKEN WING

Sitting at our kitchen table, we can watch the birds eat from our compost pile. One day Harold said: “There is a crow with a broken wing.” The poor fellow could only hop and drag the feathers of his right wing along the ground.. He wanted to fly, but he couldn’t do what he wanted to do.  The pathetic creature was doing his very best. Nevertheless, in spite of his efforts, the neighborhood cats will find him an easy prey. We gave him some corn bread and watched him hop away, knowing that without God’s help he was doomed.

Every Christian must go through an experience similar to the bird with the broken wing before he can be delivered from the power of his sin nature. Paul describes his “broken wing” experience in Romans 7:

“I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” Romans 7:15

Paul wanted to live the overcoming life that God’s law demanded of him, but no matter how hard he tried, he could only hop from sin to sin. Finally in desperation he cried:

“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from this body of death?” Romans 7:24

The phrase “body of this death” refers to the Roman practice of chaining the dead body of a murdered victim to his killer. The murderer carried the dead body until the putrid mass killed him.

In Romans 7, Paul compares himself to those miserable captives as he recalls his futile struggles to free himself from the corruption of his sin nature. Finally, when all confidence in himself was gone, he called out for a Deliverer, Jesus!

Sinning Christians, do you see yourselves as the bird with the broken wing or the man bound to a corpse? Probably not, because most of you have been deceived into thinking you cannot expect to cease from willful sin in this lifetime.  On the contrary, here is the truth:

“If you would enter into life, keep the commandments>“ Matt 19:17

“Blessed are they that DO his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life..” Rev 22:14

The Ten Commandments tell us what we must DO to enter life, but only by the power of God are we able to fly above the temptations of this sinful world.
