Joshua 1:2, 6-9 (God speaking) "[2] Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you [Joshua] and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them-to the Israelites. ... [6] Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. [7] "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. [8] Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.[9] Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." NIV
What will God enable Moses to do in Joshua 1:2,6-9 if he is "careful to do everything written in it"?
Devote Yourself to Obey Everything - "so that you may be careful to do everything written in it."
What does God command us to be "careful to do"?
The next 3 verses explain some of the life changing benefits that come from obedience:
John 14.21 (Jesus) "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." NIV
Who are the ones that Jesus says loves him?
Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." NIV
How much must we desire to live the way God requires?
James 1:22 "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
When you hear, read, study, or memorize the Bible and don't do what it says what does God say we are doing?
Don't ever forget this.
The next 4 verse show why we God expects us to be careful to obey all (obey 100%):
Matthew 28:19-20 (Jesus) "... make disciples ... and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. ..." NIV (see also Deuteronomy 12:28)
What does Jesus command us to teach others?
How can we ever do this (teach everything)?
#5 below will show you how you can obey Jesus Matthew 28:20 "obey everything" command.
Matthew 4.4 "Jesus answered, It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." NIV
How much of God's word are we to live off of?
Luke 17.10 "So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty." NIV
When can we say we have "done our duty"?
Acts 13:22 "After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'" NIV
Why did God call David "a man after my own heart"?
Are you convinced God wants you to DEVOTE yourself to obeyeverything?
By Meditating Day and Night on God's Word "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night,"
Psalm 1:1-3 "Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. [2] But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. [3] They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do." NLT
If we want to prosper in all we do what must we not do in v1 and do in v2?
"The truly happy person guides his life by God’s instruction rather than by the advice of those who reject that instruction." ESVSB
v1 is not only from people we know but also the music, TV, social media that we use.
Psalms 119.34 "Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart." NLT
What are we to ask God when meditating on his word?
What are we to tell God when we ask him to give us understanding?
Mark 4:24 (Jesus) "Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given ..." NLT
What is the other way to get more understanding of God's Word?
Which of the five questions do you want to try first? On what verse?
So God Will Bless You (because we're following God's ways and not my ways) - "Then you will be prosperous and successful."
"The Hebrew terminology used in these assurances has nothing to do with worldly wealth or worldly success, but has everything to do with accomplishing one’s mission and acting with keen insight in any circumstance that presents itself." ESVSB
"What God said to Joshua, God says to each believer today: Study, ponder, assimilate the word of God! In learning of the mind of God, we become successful in following the ways of God." CBC
What is the key thought for you from the above two study notes?
Luke 11:27-28 "As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, "God bless your mother-the womb from which you came, and the breasts that nursed you!" [28] Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice." NLT
How can you be even more blessed than Mary, the mother of Jesus?
The 4 keys to being blessed - James 1.25 "But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it— not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it— they will be blessed in what they do." NIV
To be blessed by God what four activities must one be continually doing?
Read Read to Obey Bible Reading method. Yearly reading the New Testament: learning, doing, and passing on it's commands and truths will help you not only obey ALL of Jesus' commands (which Jesus in Matthew 28:20 commands us to do) but to teach them to others.
So you'll have time to Read to Obey it's highly recommended that you start off by reading ONLY the New Testament. The One Year New Testament Reading Plan goes slower where there are many commands and faster when there isn't.
Whether one is devoted to obeying everything determines the whole course of our lives. It requires one to often think on and do God's word.
Are you willing to make learning and doing God's word primary in your life and make the rest (social media, sports, TV, and ANYTHING else) secondary?
What changes do you need to make in how your spend your time to make God's word the primary thing you think on?
Will you dedicate your life to being careful to learn and "to do everything written in it"?
If yes, tell Jesus that now and ask him to daily empower you do learn and do everything.
This week, what time of the day will you daily meet with Jesus in the Bible to learn & follow him?
