Romans 10:9-11,13 "If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. [11] As the Scriptures tell us, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced." [13] For "Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved." NLT
In Romans 10:9-11,13 what must one do to be saved?
Don't Be Silent, - "If you openly declare"
Matthew 10:32 "Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven." CSB
Make Jesus Your Lord (and master by doing Mark 8:34) - "that Jesus is Lord"
"The phrase “Jesus is Lord” seems to have been the earliest form of a Christian statement of faith, perhaps voiced at a convert’s baptism. ... Public confession is here viewed as the expression of true faith. (Christian faith was never intended to be a private, hidden thing but something to be confessed openly to the world.) Though there are clear implications for how the believer is to live (to confess Jesus as Lord means he must be Lord of the confessor’s life), the overall focus of this passage is not on living out the Good News but on simply believing it and putting our trust in it. ... God will be absolutely faithful to his promise to accept us in Christ." CBC (Cornerstone Bible Commentary)
"Merely mouthing “Jesus is Lord” and proclaiming that Jesus rose from the dead cannot secure salvation (Mt 7:21-23). A heartfelt confession of Jesus’s lordship designates a lifelong commitment that issues from the center of a person’s being, the heart. What matters is not “saying” Jesus is Lord but “making” him Lord at the core of one’s existence. This is what Paul meant by calling on the name of the Lord to be saved (10:13)." CSB Apologetics Study Bible
"Not a simple acknowledgment that He is God and the Lord of the universe, since even demons acknowledge that to be true (James 2:19). This is the deep personal conviction, without reservation, that Jesus is that person’s own master or sovereign. This phrase includes repenting from sin, trusting in Jesus for salvation, and submitting to Him as Lord. This is the volitional element of faith (see note on 1:16 )." MacArthur Bible Commentary
Trust What Jesus did (not what I did) - "and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,"
"Paul does not mean that people need to believe only this individual event with no understanding of Christ’s death, but rather they need to believe in the resurrection along with the whole complex of truth connected with it, particularly Jesus’ sin-bearing death in mankind’s place, followed by his resurrection that showed God the Father’s approval of Christ’s work (see note on 4:25). ... Saving faith is not mere intellectual agreement but deep inward trust in Christ at the core of one’s being." ESV Study Bible
"Christ’s Resurrection was the supreme validation of His ministry. Belief in it is necessary for salvation because it proved that Christ is who He claimed to be and that the Father had accepted His sacrifice in the place of sinners. Without the Resurrection, there is no salvation (1 Cor. 15:14-17)." MacArthur Bible Commentary
Saved From Hell - "you will be saved."
"Have you ever been asked, “How do I become a Christian?” These verses give you the beautiful answer: Salvation is as close as your own lips and heart. People think it must be a complicated process, but it is not. If we sincerely believe in our hearts and profess that Jesus Christ is the risen Lord, we will be saved." LASB
