Proverbs 28:13 "You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up; then God will show mercy to you."  GNT

 

  1. Sin's Devastation (never truly succeed in life the way God wants you to) "You will never succeed in life"  
    1. Sin weakens you - 1 Peter 2.11  "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul." NIV
      1. How does sin weaken you? 
    2. Sin's effect - 1 Peter 3.12 "The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do RIGHT, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil."  NLT
      1. What do we loose when we do evil? 
    3. Hell - Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who calls out to me, 'Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter."  NLT

  2. Ignore Sins  "if you try to hide your sins.
    1. Sin includes - James 4:17 "Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it."  NLT
      1. Sin is both doing wrong and not doing good. Including not doing Mark 8:34 & Joshua 1:8.
    2. Sins hardened your heart- Hebrews 3.13 "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness." NIV
      1. How do you keep a soft heart? 
    3. David's Example - Psalm 32:3,5 "When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. ... [5] Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, "I will confess my rebellion to the LORD." And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone."
      1. What did David experience when he did not confess his sin?  
      2. What does God teach us to do in this passage?  
  3. Admit to God Your Sins (and Ask for his forgiveness) "Confess them"  
    1. "the first step toward forgiveness is confession."  LASB
    2. "There are two kinds of forgiveness, judicial and parental. When we trust Christ as Lord and Savior, we receive forgiveness from the penalty of sins; that is judicial forgiveness. When we, as believers, confess our sins, we receive parental forgiveness (1 Jn. 1:9); this maintains fellowship with God our Father. BBC
    3. God wants an attitude that renounces sin instead of one that holds on to it.

    5. Ask for God’s forgiveness - Matthew 6:12 (part of the Lord's Prayer) "and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us."  NLT
    6. God will Forgive & purify - 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."  NIV
      1. If we truly confess our sins what two things does God promise to do? 
  4. Work on Sinning Less and Less  "and give them up;"
    1. "To confess and renounce sins is the definition of repentance." CSBSB
    2. Giving up sins is "strong evidence that he truly finds his sin evil." Moody
    3. Matthew 18:8
    4. 3 Keys to Giving Sin Up - Psalm 119:10-11 "With all my heart I seek you. Do not allow me to stray from your commands. (11) In my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you."  NET
      1. Knowing, following, & serving God needs to be #1 in your life
      2. Daily asking God for help to obey all of his commands
      3. Memorize God's word so you can remember and use it.
  5. God will Forgive You (God will show you mercy and enable you to succeed in living his way) - "then God will show mercy to you."
    1. Will you receive God's mercy if you hide/conceal your sins? 
  6. How I deal with my sins determines how much of God's mercy and success I'll experience in this life. I need to daily confess and give up my sins.
