Psalm 119:10-11 "With all my heart I seek you. Do not allow me to stray from your commands. (11) In my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you." NET
In verse above what three things will help me not to sin against God?
Here are 3 key ways to sin less and less:
#1: 100% effort to know, obey, & serve God - "With all my heart I seek you."
Positive Example - 2 Chronicles 15.12,15 "They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. ... (15) All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side." NIV (rest from war)
What were the two results of them seeking the Lord with all of their heart?
Negative Example - Revelation 3:16 "So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth!" NET
What is Jesus' promise?
What to Stay Away From - 1 John 5.21 "keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts." NLT
In your life what takes "God’s place in your hearts."?
#2: Depend on God for help against sinning - "Do not allow me to stray from your commands."
Ask for God's help by praying like this:
Matthew 6:13 (part of the Lord's Prayer) "And don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one." NLT
Luke 22:40,46 CSB "When he reached the place, he told them, "Pray that you may not fall into temptation." [46] "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won't fall into temptation."
What can we do to not fall into temptation?
What type of praying is that?
Psalms 19:12-13 "But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. [13] Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me." NIV
Psalm 51:10 "Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me." NLT
John 17.15 “keep them safe from the evil one.”NLT
Look for the way out - 1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." NIV
#3: Memorize & Meditate on God's Word to Stop Sinning - "In my heart I store up your words,"
"Store God's word "By careful memorization and pondering" ESVSB
"He does not make us holy against our will or without our cooperation." BBC
"Carefully studying and memorizing the Lord’s instruction are ways to battle sin." NIV BTSB
"Hiding means keeping God’s Word in our hearts to deter sin. This alone should inspire us to understand, meditate on, review, and memorize Scripture. But these practices on their own will not keep us from sinning; we must also put God’s Word to work in our lives, making it a vital guide for everything we do. Each time you read the Bible, ask, “Lord, what can I do to put this Scripture into practice today?” LASB
"Sin is not necessary. Memorizing and obeying God’s Word leads us to avoid sin. Thus, we bear responsibility when we do not use his Word to fight temptation." CSB Disciple's Study Bible
Memorize so you don't forget - Proverbs 3:1 "My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart." NLT
Obedience will set you free from the power of sin (by remembering and obeying God's word) - John 8:31-32 "Jesus said to the people who believed in him, You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. (32) And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." NLT (set free from the power of sin v32,34,36)
Romans 8:5-6 "Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. [6] So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace." NLT
What does v5 instruct us to do?
What does v6 instruct us to do?
Memorize (not forget) + study + meditate day and night + with all my hear = not sin against God.
What do you want to remember from this section?
My Goal must be - "so I might not sin against you."
Aim for constant improvement (not sinless perfection) - Revelation 2:19 "I know all the things you do. I have seen your love, your faith, your service, and your patient endurance. And I can see your constant improvement in all these things." NLT
