James 5:16 "The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect." CSB
In James 5:16 if you want your prayers to be powerful what kind of a person do you need to be?
Fully Living God's Way- "The prayer of a righteous person"
Live the way God requires - 1 Peter 3.12 "The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do RIGHT, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil." NLT
Who are the only ones God hears? Why?
"The prayer is effective because the person who is praying is righteous. The person is not sinless, but he or she has confessed known sins to God and is completely committed to him and trying to do his will. Again, we can say that the righteous person gets what he or she wants in prayer because he wants what God wants." LABC
What is the key thought of each of the three sentences?
Results in Very Powerful Prayers- "is very powerful in its effect."
1 John 3.22 And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him. NLT
What will we receive?
Why will we receive 'whatever we ask'?
Other Keys to Powerful Prayers - After making sure we are living righteously (living the way God requires = "because we obey him and do the things that please him") here are some other keys to praying powerfully:
Ask in Jesus name - John 14:13 "You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father." NLT
"Praying in Jesus’ name means praying in a way consistent with his character and his will (a person’s name in the ancient world represented what the person was like); it also means coming to God in the authority of Jesus. ... Adding “in Jesus’ name” at the end of every prayer is neither required nor wrong. Effective prayer must ask for and desire what Jesus delights in." ESVSB
Ask according to his will - 1 John 5:14-15, Matthew 6:10 "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. [15] And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him. [Matthew 6:10] your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." NIV
"believers do not demand what they want or think they need; rather, they discuss with God what he wants for them. When believers align their prayers to God’s will, he hears them. ... They should not think that they can obtain anything they want in order to benefit themselves. Prayer in line with God’s will is prayer for the benefit of God’s kingdom," LABC
Keep Asking - Luke 11.8 "if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you NEED because of your shameless persistence." NLT
Saturated with God's word - John 15:7 "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you." NIV
Faith - Matthew 13.58 "he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith." NIV
Which two prayer keys are ones you want to focus on this week?
P.R.A.Y. acronym - A great way to pray
Praise & Thanksgiving Praise God for who He is (his attributes) and thank him for what He has and will do.
Repent of the sins committed and the commands ignored. Ask for the desire and strength to turn from sin.
Ask for the needs of others and myself with faith, persistence, and patience.
Yield to his will on my requests and schedule for today. (“Not my will but yours be done” Luke 22:42 NIV)
Try praying P.R.A.Y. right now so you can experience it's effectiveness.
By fully living God's way our prayers will be very powerful.
This week how can you pray powerfully?
Listen to the message "Becoming A Praying Person" by Timothy Ateek Here's the 7 ways to pray so you maximize enjoyment of God from that message.
The Lord’s Prayer: Use it as a framework for ways to pray to God.
Pray Scripture: Let what you are reading determine what you are praying.
Lectio Divina: Sit quietly. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide You. Pick a verse. Write down your thoughts. Listen to God. Pray.
The Examen Prayer: Sit quietly in God’s presence. Walk through your day and express gratitude to God for what he did. Ask God to reveal key moments of your day. Ask Jesus if He ever dealt with this or what He wants you to learn from this.
Ask & Listen: Ask and then see if God brings a thought to mind or a specific verse, or some impression on your heart. Who do You want me to pray for right now? What are You trying to show me right now? What attitude do You want me to have right now? How do You want me to respond in this situation? Is there anything I need to confess right now?
Chair Time: 15 minutes a day for 30 days. Like entering the throne room. Listen just as much as we talk in prayer.
