God’s Gift for Us (includes)

 

(1) Adoption by God 

  1. John 1:12 (book of John in the Bible, chapter 1, verse 12) "But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn ..."
  2. John 3:3 "Jesus replied, I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God."
  3. Galatians 3:26 "For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus." 

 

(2) Eternal Life 

  1. John 3:14 "so [Jesus] must be [crucified], so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.⁠” 
  2. John 5:24 "I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life." 

 

(2B) Other Parts of God's Gift

  1. Providing for Our Needs - Matthew 6:33 "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."  NLT
  2. Direction in Life - John 8:12 "Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."  NLT
  3. Freedom from Power of Sin - John 8:31-32,34,36 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, "You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. [32] And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." [34] Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. [36] So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free."  NLT

 

Our Problem, God’s Solution

 

(3) Cut Off From God

  1. Isaiah 59:2 "It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore." 
  2. James 4:17 "Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it."  NLT
  3. Isaiah 53:6 "All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all."
  4. Romans 3:20 "For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are." 

 

(4) Results in Eternal Death

  1. Hebrews 9:27 "each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment," 
  2. Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death," 
  3. Revelation 21:8 "But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars-their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." 

 

(5) God's Solution

  1. Isaiah 53:6 "... the LORD laid on him the sins of us all." 
  2. 1 John 2:2 "[Christ] himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins" 
  3. John 3:14 "so [Jesus] must be [crucified], so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.⁠” 
  4. 1 Peter 3:18  "Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit."

 

(6) Not By Works

  1. Ephesians 2:8-9 "God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done." 
  2. Titus 3:5 "he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit." 
  3. Romans 4:5 ”But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.”  

 

How to Receive God’s Gift

 

(7) BELIEVE Only: Jesus' Death Saves You  

  1. Romans 3:25 "People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood." 
  2. John 3:14 "so [Jesus] must be [crucified], so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.⁠”   
  3. Romans 10:9 "If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."  
    1. "they need to believe in the resurrection along with the whole complex of truth connected with it, particularly Jesus’ sin-bearing death in mankind’s place, followed by his resurrection that showed God the Father’s approval of Christ’s work (see note on 4:25). ... Saving faith is not mere intellectual agreement but deep inward trust in Christ at the core of one’s being." ESV Study Bible

 

(8) TURN From: Your Sins  

  1. Acts 3:19 "Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away." 
  2. Luke 24:47 - "There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent."  
  3. Acts 20:21 "they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus."  NIV

  4. Confession is agreeing with God about your sin, its futility, and its destructiveness for you and others.
  5. Repentance is the realization you don't want to live that way anymore and with God's help turning away from living on your own terms and following Jesus and his teachings.

 

(9) DECIDE to: Live to Follow & Serve Jesus

  1. Luke 9:23-24 "Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it."  
  2. Colossians 2:6 "And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him."  
  3. John 12:25-26 "Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me."
  4. Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who calls out to me, 'Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter."  


(10) TELL GOD:

  1. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son, and that He paid the penalty for my sins and You raised Him to life.
  2. I rely only on what Jesus has done on the cross rather than on what I do to save me.
  3. I want to turn from my sins and ask for Your forgiveness.
  4. I want Jesus to take control of my life. 
  5. Help me to live to obey Jesus as my Lord and trust Him as my Savior from this day on.
    1. Philippians 2:13 "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him." 
  6. Thank you for the gift of adoption and eternal life!
