“If any OF YOU lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5
We are shown in a previous verse (verse 2) that those words were written to brethren. (The word [men] was incorrectly added by the translators.) That promise of God is for the church.
“The wisdom from above” will teach us how to discern between good and evil in our times of temptation when our faith is tested. Here, James defines “the wisdom from above“:
“ … the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:17
We have assurance of receiving this promise when we are a lover of truth and are seeking God’s righteous guidance. “ … The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
But - we must ask in faith, NOTHING WAVERING:
“But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that WAVERETH is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A DOUBLE-MINDED man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:6-8
TO WAVER, IS TO YIELD TO TEMPTATION AND CHOOSE TO SIN!
“But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked. Isaiah 57:20-21.
If you yield to temptation, and choose to sin, you can be certain that your prayer will not be answered:
Proverbs 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.
