SATAN HAS A BAIT FOR EVERY FISH
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul plainly said his advice to the unmarried was not a Commandment of God:
1 Corinthians 7:25 Now concerning virgins I HAVE NO COMMANDMENT OF THE LORD: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
We can learn how satan used that prudent counsel of a faithful apostle to deceive people who sincerely want to serve God:
1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1 Timothy 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1 Timothy 4:3 FORBIDDING TO MARRY …“
Satan has a bait for every fish. He cannot deceive people who are seeking holiness with temptations that are blatantly evil. He will seduce them with doctrines of demons that have the appearance of good. He does this by “adding to” the perfect law of God.
In order for us to come into the unity of the faith, we must use the oracles of God to test all doctrines that pertain to salvation. For example, Paul’s advice to the unmarried is useful to make wise personal decisions. It becomes a doctrine of demons when it becomes a commandment that defines sin.
This same principle also pertains to food, drink and modest clothing. The church needs teachers that warn about things that open the door to temptation and sin. Nevertheless, if the teaching about food, drink or clothing defines sin, it is a doctrine of demons.
In order for the church to come to the unity of the faith, ministers must make a clear distinction between their prudent advice that leads to godliness and the Commandments of God.
