An Introduction to Phil Keaggy and His Music

ChristianMusic.com asked Phil Keaggy, How would you describe your music?

Phil thoughtfully replies, "Really don’t know that answer."

His answer is not surprising. Phil Keaggy is a versatile composer, songwriter, performer, singer and producer, who cannot be tied down to any genre or style, because it depends on the project, the composition and the theme, as his ample musical gifts adapt beautifully to whatever genre or genres beckon in the composition in question.

Though Phil Keaggy got his start in rock, he has evolved and grown as a musician throughout the years. One finds that Phil Keaggy's electric and acoustic guitar-based contemporary music represents a vast selection of genres, melodies, interesting rhythms and tempos, making it really hard to pin down just one description of his music.

GLASS HARP (Referred by some as Christianized Beatles)
Love the hair! Notice the huge belt buckles & shirt styles, popular in the 1970's!

Phil Keaggy; (Guitar, Vocals)
John Sferra; (Flute, Drums, & Vocals)
Dan Pecchio; (Bass & Vocals)

For Phil Keaggy is no stranger to composing and songwriting, getting his professional start as a rock guitar virtuoso in the late '60's and 1970's, as a very young man (19 years old).

He formed a group in 1968, at the age of 17, with his best friend, John Sferra and bassist Dan Pecchio, known as GLASS HARP. When they won an Ohio area's "Battle of the Bands," it led to a multi-record deal with Decca Records. Mark W. B. Allender commented about GLASS HARP debut album (1970), which was recorded at Jimi Hendrix 's The Electric Lady Studio, produced by award-winning Lewis Merenstein. "Keaggy is an amazing guitarist with innovative playing techniques and an ear for texture and tone color."

Album notes: On this GLASS HARP debut album, Phil Keaggy's growing commitment to the Lord can be heard in his songs, CAN YOU SEE ME and LOOK IN THE SKY. After leaving GLASS HARP after 3 albums in 1972, Phil Keaggy left the group to pursue creating more spiritually inspiring music for the Lord, feeling the unmistakable leading of the Holy Spirit.

GLASS HARP was a bonding experience, making friends even closer. Phil shared with ChrisianMusic.com, "My old bandmates were very close friends and are to this day. Glass Harp is the band I was in between 1968 and 1972, but till this day we still play music together, record--pray and have a good time."

Over his long prolific music career, Phil Keaggy worked with a variety of Christian artists of different genres on various projects and jam sessions, including:

LOVE SONG, 2ND CHAPTER OF ACTS, Paul Clark, Nancy Honeytree, A BAND CALLED DAVID, .Joe English, Margaret Becker, Randy Stonehill, Russ Taff, Derri Daugherty, Mark Heard, Steve Taylor, Rick Cua, Phil Madeira, Charlie Peacock, Sam Bush, John Mark Painter of Fleming and John, Ashley Cleveland, Jimmy Abegg and in an informal jam with Paul McCartney, a long-time dream of Phil's.

Over the years, Phil Keaggy has made 50 albums.

Early Albums: WHAT A DAY * LOVE BROKE THRU (First recording of Randy Stonehill/Keith Green/Todd Fishkind's classic song, LOVE BROKE THRU) * EMERGING ('77). In 1980, Phil Keaggy signed with Sparrow Records, recording TOWN TO TOWN, PH'LIP SIDE, and PLAY THRU ME.

1990'S - FIND ME IN THESE FIELD (Rock), Crimson and Blue (Blues Rock)

Awards: 1988 - Dove Award for instrumental album, THE WIND AND THE WHEAT.
1992 - Celtic-influenced instrumental, BEYOND NATURE.

1998 to 2001- Dove Awards for instrumental albums: INVENTION, ACOUSTIC SKETCHES, MAJESTY AND WONDER, and LIGHTS OF MADRID.

From the years 2000 - 2006, Keaggy has made nine instrumental albums, two of which were sent to this reviewer.

May of 2007 - Phil released another collection of songs with vocals; ACOUSTIC CAFE: Phil Keaggy and Friends; A collection of acoustic songs, with vocals, which are favorites.

This reviewer was given 3 recently produced, very different Phil Keaggy CD's to soak on: JAMMED, ROUNDABOUT and the CD to be reviewed, DREAM AGAIN, which showcase the depth and width and scope of his expansive musical repertoire. It is amazing that such talent and creative gifts exist in one man! Phil is comfortable in composing and thinking musically in a variety of genres and styles, weaving some very different tapestries musically unique to Phil Keaggy.

After soaking in his very diverse selections of music, it is clear to this reviewer that Phil Keaggy is an artist of versatile musical talent, with an uncanny knack to create either through improvisation or planned, deliberate songwriting, the perfect melody & rhythm, and supporting musical voices which musically describes the theme / lyrical message of each composition he performs, records, and produces.

While this review is specifically exploring his CD DREAM AGAIN, I would be remiss as a reviewer if I didn't explore a little of Phil Keaggy's other musical collections of vastly different types of music, in order for the reader to truly appreciate the huge musical gifts which the Lord has given Phil Keaggy, evident in all of his albums.

In his two albums listed below, his skill at improvising the solo / melody parts on one of his fine guitars shines forth, showing his more progressive modes of creative expression.

JAMMED - An inspired collection of edgy progressive electric rock, recorded over the years, which offers "groove-driven funk, jazz, soul, smoky blues," with moving rock rhythms, along with some absolutely smoking electric guitar riffs and solos which soar to the heavens and back.

In these selections, from 1970 - 2005, Phil jammed in different sessions with a variety of different, gifted musicians on different occasions, including: Lynn Williams, Spencer Campbell, John Sferra, Wade Jaynes, Mike Radovsky, Keith Carlock, AND Anthony Salee. Phil comments in an interview with McCain & CO., "Some jams developed out of other songs, while others were birthed from trying to learn each other's styles"

Album notes: Rock music lovers who appreciate great improvisation will truly enjoy Phil Keaggy's innovative edgy efforts, playing on a variety of guitars, depending when the jam session was recorded.

The earliest jam session presented is Cut 11; PREHISTROBIE, which dates back to 1970, performed on his 1960 Les Paul. Phil was just out of high school, living at home, about a month before his mother's untimely death in a car wreck, and about a month before Phil earnestly dedicated his life and music to Jesus. This snippet was part of a larger experimental piece, composed by Phil. Phil comments, "You can hear the youth in me, and the early style which was to develop later on."

Other guitars heard on these cuts are his Zion, his Strat, his Parker Fly, all of which Phil sure does play with a lot of heart and energy, on a level of professionalism and skill which is a huge treat for the listener.

Reviewer's favorites:

ROUTE CANAL - Hard rock effort which explodes immediately into a driving rock fast two beat, with cookin' bass, and drums setting the song up for a wild ride of energy and zing plus. Bass guitar player flies through 16 note / dotted note basic melody / counter-melody theme which flows throughout the song; played smoothly, evenly, clearly, keeping this ensemble of equally busy electric guitars, bass, rhythm and the inspiring solo riffs pumping along. 32nd notes also appear in the solo guitar riff, played effortlessly with spirit. Great ensemble work. Smoke must of been coming out of the recording studio.

ZEE BLUES - Soulful blues and improvisational skill on the electric guitar, come together for a delightful effort, with horns and other voices offering fine chordal support.

KEGWORTH SPEAKS - A great example of an improvisational progressive rock jam, which showcases Phil's phenomenal talent in the progressive rock genre, with Anthony Sallee on bass and drummer Keith Carlock adding their gifts to the recording, creating music which is well worth the effort to wrap one's head around.

Phil comments on his promotional material sent to me from McCain and Co., "KEGWORTH SPEAKS was recorded in 1996. It was the day that bassist Anthony Sallee introduced me to drummer Keith Carlock. Together we created this jam in my little home studio."

ROUNDABOUT - A diverse and interesting collection of 17 progressive acoustic songs based on a collection of improvisational moments, compiled as sound-checks, prior to the doors opening at various concerts. Phil explains the reasoning behind sound-checks, "I do want the guitar to sound just right at the concert."

Album notes: On this CD, Phil says that he used his James Olson, Del Langejans and Charis guitars, equipped with the LR Baggs Duet mic/pickup system. The guitars are hooked up to a bunch of tuners, pedals, tremelo, a line 6 DL4 delay modeler, etc, which is enough to make the layman's head explode. Phil is a talented technical wizard , who uses it all to great effect, creating interesting sounds, and effects which worked well with these individual improvised cuts.

These original sound-checks were edited by Phil, "trimmed of unnecessary bits, tightened up and given a good flow." These sound-checks seem to be a very creative time for Phil. It was really hard to decide on my top four favorites, with such a variety of tempos, rhythms, and creative improvised melodies, done by the one and only Phil Keaggy.

While I loved them all, here are the ones that really stood out to me. They all have strong, improvised, most enjoyable melodies, a variety of interesting rhythms and sound, varying from tight dotted note jams to funk-driven to the flowing note streams effortlessly played.

Reviewer's favorites: 2ND AVENUE * SOUTH OF BOREDOM * IS IT GOING * MERRY-GO-ROUND

Overview of DREAM AGAIN

And now for something completely different; an album which wonderfully combines his skills of expressing so well lyrically what is in his heart, and his fine vocal abilities with his considerable, creative gifts at composing, performing and producing (under Strobie Records); DREAM AGAIN.

A collection of 12 songs, DREAM AGAIN is Keaggy's first musical project with vocals in seven years which combines original vocals with a creative mesh of Phil's unique musical offerings, since his 2000 release, INSEPARABLE.

Phil Keaggy shares with ChristianMusic.com, "This album is mainly acoustic. I have gotten out of my system the things I wanted to say with my electric guitar with 'Jammed' and the things I wanted to say improvisationally with 'Roundabout'."

What a delightful, spiritually uplifting, listening experience, both musically and lyrically! Phil's years of experience and evolvement as an independent musician, composer, vocalist, lyricist, producer and most important of all as a Christian, who is dedicated to the Lord, is very much evident in all aspects of the music found on this album, sure to bless and uplift the listener, both the believer and seeker!

Phil composed all the musical compositions, performed the guitar solos (except REVIVE ME), wrote the lyrics for 10 of the songs, contributed lead vocals / participated in duets / support vocals on WHY and produced the album under Strobie Records, as well; Truly an independent, widely talented Christian musical artist firmly connected to the Holy Spirit, and a performer / musical artist not to be missed!

This reviewer found that DREAM AGAIN is an album with wide audience appeal, offering a creative, spirit-inspiring collection of uniquely different, memorable (traditional and progressive), contemporary guitar & guitar-based compositions and tempos; (mellow to rock, both acoustic & electric), ranging in a variety of musical styles, creating never a dull moment or a boring listening experience. Everytime I listen to this album, I hear something I didn't notice before in the composition at hand.

Closer look at the Compositions ....

It is clear to this reviewer that Phil Keaggy is an independent artist of versatile musical talent, with an uncanny knack to create at the center of any well-composed composition, the perfect melody, as well as counter melody, inner voices & rhythm which altogether musically describes / supports the theme / lyrical message of each composition he creates, often improvising as he performs on his guitar or composes in his more progressive modes of creative expression, such as using his trusty old Korg O1W synthesized keyboard in MICAH 6:8.

Creative use of sophisticated composition techniques are very much evident in this inspiring effort. One can hear in each composition three different melody themes, which work together to offer a fine musical canvass for each lyrical message. In his fertile mind, Phil's inspiring melodies and support accompaniment make good use of a variety of key accidentals, chord changes & seamless key modulations; including smooth segues between major and minor keys, great dynamics, well-done inner-voices and counter-melodies, all to great effect.

Compositions are held beautifully together with the perfect variety of tempos and percussion accompaniment which are always interesting and a perfect fit to the song in question. A variety of interesting rhythms keep the tempo and mood of each composition musically intriguing, in whatever musical format used.

Closer look at the Lyrical Messages...

Concerning the heart-felt lyrical messages: "Dream Again is like a homecoming for Keaggy. A reflection of his heart, Keaggy gives the listener a rare inside look into some of his most personal thoughts and relationships."

Phil has penned lyrics for 10 of the 12 songs that reflect his thoughts on relationships; his relationship with God, with the people close to him or with the world around him. Phil beautifully expresses heart-felt thoughts about his relationship with the Lord, what that requires of us, about relationships with special people whom the Lord put in his life, for whom he is very grateful for and his thankfulness for the love that the Lord has for " individuals, families and humankind," in both his lyrics and the vocal deliveries found on this album.

The themes covered in this collection:

Depending on the Lord, who loves us * Showing the love of the Lord through our actions and words

Lord shows love through families, friends & strangers * Walking in the Light, Pleasing the Lord

Phil Keaggy combined two poems written by his friend, the talented lyricist Tom Albertson, and composed the music for these songs, THANK YOU FOR TODAY and REDEMPTION, which also express themes near and dear to Phil's heart.

THANK YOU FOR TODAY * "About gratitude for living in the moment; A gift from God." Being able to let go of the past, and trust the future to the Lord, and enjoying , living life with the Lord moment by moment.

REDEMPTION * Explores redemption and the" wonders of all good things bestowed by the Lamb of God", in contrast to the human condition which yearns to always be right, which often takes people away from God's way and will.

Not only can Phil Keaggy compose and write lyrics, but he can also bless the listener with his vocal gifts, which not only bring to life the lyrical messages of the songs, but also reflect his thankfulness for and gratitude to the Lord and the people in his life. He uses his voice in just the right style and volume which brings the message and mood of the song to life.

For example, Phil performs in a full, warm, dynamic vocal style which express his love for these people and the Lord in the ballads:

DREAM AGAIN * Reminder to himself and to the listener to give problems and troubles to the Lord, keep focused on goals and dreams, expressing the faithfulness of the Lord.

KATHY'S SONG * For sister Kathy - A song to offer love and encouragement and gratitude appreciating how she has shown love to others and himself, being used by the Lord to be a loving force, as well as to cheer her up about her upcoming 60th birthday.

HOW CAN I THANK YOU * Song dedicated to his big sister Mary Ellen, lovingly who stepped up to the plate when their mom died, offering love, guidance, comfort and encouragement to Phil to fully commit to the Lord.

ITS YOU AND ME - Wonderfully romantic ballad for the love of his life, his wife Bernadette. His deep love for his wife shines through his vocal performance.

THERE WITH YOU - Loving appreciation and parental love and devotion for Olivia, his daughter. His love and parental devotion flows through his vocals like a beacon. Sentiment reminds the listener how our heavenly Father loves and is ever faithful to us, His children.

LOVE IS THE REASON - A dynamic ballad which describes the love between two people, newly weds Robin and Keith. Phil's expressive, poignant vocals bring to light in a loving way the ideals expressed which should be remembered in a marriage, making this song perfect for weddings, anniversaries and a reminder to us all to remember why we married our spouse in the first place.

In the fast-moving rhythmic, acoustic rock prayer hymn with a catchy rhythm, REVIVE ME, Phil performs in a rhythmic, slightly intense, whispery yet fervent style, which reminds the listener that despite the spirited composition, this song is a prayer hymn, asking the Lord for help, acknowledging dependence on Him.

To add even more variety to the vocal sound, Phil also brings to this project the gifts and skills of his elderly, yet talented children (young adults), who have inherited and developed musical gifts of their own; musicians and vocalists Ian (WHY) and Alicia (MICAH). Ian's vocals give an edgy quality and dynamic oomph to the rock anthem, WHY, and Alicia's airy, smooth vocals offer the perfect heavenly aura to the vocals in the song, MICAH 6:8.

Song Notes on WHY: Ian shines in the song, WHY, offering great vocal contrast, performing the verses in a quiet, almost monotone rap-like style, which swells to a rock style edginess into and during the chorus. Phil comes in at the chorus and fills out the harmony part.

Song Notes on Micah 6:8: Alicia performs the voice of the angel, who answers the question, sung by man (Phil Keaggy). The vocals in this song carry the melody, while the strong, wonderful musical accompaniment consists of two intricate counter-melodies performed on the marimba setting on Phil's old Korg O1W.

WOW! What a innovative, creative, diverse collection of songs, with something for everyone! Besides offering musically interesting, well-done compositions, dynamic vocals, heartfelt lyrical messages which more than fulfill the goals of this album, the stellar production values bring out the best in this musical effort. The recording and mixing are done just right, presenting these songs in their best light; how they were envisioned by Phil Keaggy.

Phil shares with Christianmusic.com, "The album to me is an album that I feel makes a real statement that something can be home spun, in a modest studio, but still come out sounding really good. It was mastered by Richard Dodd, and I’m very grateful for his expertise in making the album even sonically stand higher and sound better than I originally thought it could be."

Thus, it is not surprising that I highly recommend DREAM AGAIN for anyone's Christian music collection, as it has wide audience appeal, offering a musical project reflecting the enormous talent and experience of one of America's musical treasures, Phil Keaggy, an independent Christian music artist with a heart for the Lord.

For those of our readers who enjoy a deeper evaluation and exploration of the music on DREAM AGAIN, and learn more about Phil Keaggy, continue on to the following sections.

Closer look at the Compositions and lyrical Messages

This innovative, creative, diverse collection of songs covers the bases musically, offering a pleasing variety of musical compositions. It is indeed refreshing and inspiring how these songs in this album have musical compositions which create the perfect aura mood and support for each of the relationship-themed, lyrical messages.

Warm, melodic, poignant acoustic ballads: KATHY'S SONG * HOW CAN I THANK YOU -

Song Notes: Two huge favorites of this acoustic guitar-loving reviewer!

* KATHY'S SONG - A dynamic ballad which offers a lot to listen to and absorb in the composition, supporting beautifully the heart-felt sentiments of a brother for his sister. Traditional use of guitar ensemble which offers a delightful counter-rmelody using a descending minor scale in the intro & in the first 4 stanzas of each verse, which segues into a major key sound, with lovely, solid, strumming chordal support. Sound builds to the chorus when easy beat drums and other voices enter the musical stew. Love the various melodies heard in the various parts of this song.

* HOW CAN I THANK YOU - Simple, yet full acoustic sound accompaniment which offers strong support to the dynamic vocals expressing such heart-felt, poignant lyrics. No drums at all are needed, as the song is kept steady and moving by well-composed guitar voices which flesh out the glorious melodies which one always finds in Phil's songs. A truly beautiful effort which chokes up this reviewer every time.

Inspiring Acoustic love song ballads: ITS YOU AND ME * THERE WITH YOU

Song Notes: Strong favorites!! Both have upbeat, bright entertaining, well-done, creative compositions featuring full sound, solid acoustic ensembles, creative sparkling melodies, propelled by a driving pop beat, done in Phil Keaggy style.

ITS YOU AND ME - Begins with driving 16th note triplets, reminding a listener of some of the music by Elvis. Especially love the chorus melody, which is infectious, being the perfect musical vehicle for the meaningful lyrics.

THERE WITH YOU - Catchy, dotted note rhythm and melodies dance throughout this composition, giving it life and brightness which musically describe the daughter who Phil wrote this song for.

Poignant, yet peppy praise and worship anthem: THANK YOU FOR TODAY

Song Notes: Composed as a gift for his friend. Tom Albertson, who wrote the lyrics.

THANK YOU FOR TODAY: Song has a bright and cheery and diversely interesting melody, which makes good use of minor and major key changes which are so subtle that one doesn't realize them, but hears the great result. Love the melody change in the Bridge.

Light rock statements of faith anthems: DREAM AGAIN (acoustic) * REDEMPTION:(Light Rock; acoustic / electric guitar)

Song Notes: Both songs have interesting dynamic and mood changes, and perfect guitar ensemble accompaniment reflecting the lyrical message being presented.

* DREAM AGAIN - Truly a splendid effort. Begins with a gradual dynamic crescendo of guitar and swirling sythns, reminding me a little of the beginning of the Beatle's Magical Mystery Tour title song. This intro slides nicely into a crisp rhythmic guitar accompaniment. Easy rock beat propels the tempo along at an easy pace. Lots of inner voices in the counter-melody voices, as well as solid rhythm guitar work. Nice embellishments of some electric guitar

* REDEMPTION: Begins with the chorus, which is quiet and reflective in nature. Begins simply with solid acoustic accompaniment minus the drums, with some quiet chordal support of electric guitar, offering a solemn feeling. Volume pumps up a few notches in the first verse with some nice electric guitar additions, to the acoustic guitar ensemble. Volume and joyous enthusiasm blooms in the third verse, rock anthem style, which describes the inner joy and hope believers feel and can receive from belonging to Jesus, our Redeemer.

Stirring, inspirational anthem with memorable melody: LOVE IS THE REASON

Song Notes: Another strong favorite:

* LOVE IS THE REASON is a flowing, dynamic masterpiece, offering a glorious composition, featuring dynamic, memorable melodies and solid accompaniment which blends voices of inspiring piano, guitars and strings, which soars beautifully with dynamic changes. Well done addition of strings adds volume, support and melody support voices but doesn't overwhelm. Great use of minor to major key changes and modulations, plus other interesting variations used by composers like Phil. Truly, an anthem worthy of a wedding ceremony.

Progressive yet poignant compositions: MICAH 6:8 * REVIVE ME - Favorite creative additions to this CD.

Song Notes: Both of these songs have unusual elements found in their compositions, with the wonderful result of offering creatively refreshing, interesting musical melodies, counter-melodies, rhythms and just the right support for the vocals expressing the lyrical messages..

* MICAH 6:8 - Phil effectively uses his trusty Korg O1W synthesized keyboard , set on marimba, giving the song a wonderfully, rich, deep, spirited Caribbean sound, in the delicate and precise dotted note counter-melodies done in the marimba voice: In both the base and lead. Also the listener is treated to a solo on Phil's Les Paul guitar.

* REVIVE ME - This rock prayer hymn begins softly and build in volume and intensity, throughout the song, quieting down again at the end. This most unusual acoustic-based rock prayer hymn set to a moving, driven bongo & light snare beat, further propelled by a spirited, crisp acoustic accompaniment, courtesy of Ian Keaggy. Simple yet very effective support for solemn mood for lyrics. Sound builds into the chorus. Electric guitar offer a light counter points midway through, and fully enters the mix joining the chorus full force in chordal support about the third time through. Nice little bass interlude toward the end.

For good measure, there is a combination acoustic & electric / slightly edgy rock, call to action anthem: WHY

Song Notes: Another strong favorite of this reviewer, with elements loved by the younger generation.

WHY - WHY is a spirited and dynamically edgy, acoustic / electric rock anthem, with a composition that offers the perfect combination of the quieter, acoustic-supported melody during the verses, which swells dynamically into edgy rock in the chorus, courtesy of spirited electric guitar support / counter melody / embellishments, plus a soulful riff in the interlude, performed in a minor key.

Vocals: Ian shines in the song, WHY, offering great vocal contrast, performing the verses in a quiet, almost monotone rap-like style, which swells to a rock style edginess into and during the chorus.

And a contemporary acoustic instrumental, TRAVELING LIGHT, with delightful progressive influences, as well as other interesting compositional additions.

Song Notes:

TRAVELING LIGHT - Wonderful combination of light to broad acoustic solo creating a moving, tender melody, with delicate inner voices provided by guitar and synthesizer, which offers a subdued to dynamic support; a heavenly, other-world feeling to the intro, and voices of heavenly choirs toward the end of the song. Composed in a minor key, with some effortless major key modulations in the melody, which slide back into minor key. Enjoyable guitar improvisations of main melody, including a swirl or two of 32nd notes!

Phil comments on his website, "This is a piece of music I created for Ian, but nothing developed for a vocal. I took those same chords and applied them to one of Keith Moore’s lyrics, that went on “It’s Personal” called “Your Light”. I took the drum track, bass, electric guitar and added acoustic solo guitar and string pads. I thought that piece was a nice break in the middle of the album."

More about these relationship-themed, lyrical messages....

Phil Keaggy graciously answered some interview questions for ChristianMusic.com.

Early life and growing up years.. Where did you grow up?

"I grew up in Youngstown Ohio as well as in So Calif. for a time. Early training? I went to the school of life, being one of 10 children. I went to grade school and high school but never went to college. It was my dream to play music all my life since I was 10 or 11."

Did you grow up in a Christian home and /or have a Christian church family, or did the you find the Lord later?

"I’m one of 10 children. Mother was Irish Catholic and Dad was Lutheran, but came to know Christ personally later in life. When Mom passed away as a result of a car accident, my oldest sister Ellen shared the good news with me and I responded to the call of Christ in my life. I always believed in God, but needed to have New Birth (Remember Nicodemus—a leader among the Jews and Jesus spoke to him about the New Birth). Well, I was born again and I thank God for that special day! I believe to this day that my mother’s prayers have been answered and all my siblings are in the faith."

What was your early musical experience? When did you start playing the guitar/ writing songs? First performances?

"I started to play at the age of 10 years old. I loved guitar, but I loved the drums too. My dad and mom agreed that the guitar would be most suitable for me. Besides, my grandfather, on Dad’s side, was a guitar player. So was my big brother David. My first professional gig was while in the 7th grade. I played to a big audience in southern California. I also was asked to back up a popular singer of that time, a man named Mel Carter."

Musical Influences: Artists (secular and Christian) which influenced you growing up or now which have influenced your singing style, performance skills and / or composing?

"The 50’s gave me a keen interest in music. I was born in 1951. There was Johnny Ray, Elvis, The Everly Brothers and Eddie Cochran, just to name a few.. The 60’s gave me the influences of The Beatles, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, Page and Mike Bloomfield. As a young player, I tried to fashion my style after these artists and players."

"Paul McCartney was a huge musical mentor through his recordings, but I also came to love classical as well ( Vaughn-Williams, Grieg, Bach etc)"

"Throughout the 70s and 80s, I continued to listen to many guitarists such as Julian Bream, John Renbourn, Bruce Cockburn, Anthony Phillips, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny and Alan Holdsworth. I always wanted to keep my ears open to new influences. During all these years, I wrote and recorded my music and went on tour quite a lot. The '90s till this present time, I find myself enjoying acoustic music the most, though I still play electric on recordings and the occasional band date."

Mentors? Who in your life as been a source of guidance, reinforced your character, taught you your important values?

"My sister Ellen, CS Lewis, Rev Paul Dear, Johnny Kay, Bruce Coleman, Fr Charles Crumbly (early on) and especially my wife Bernadette who has been by my side for over 33 years. She knows me best and is a constant blessing to me as she is so honest and truthful."

How did the Lord prepare you for your life of service through music? What talents or attitudes / character qualities were you encouraged to develop? How?

"February of 1970 was a turning point in my life. God and the Bible began to influence my thoughts and attitudes. So did other like minded, believing musicians such as Love Song, Larry Norman and Randy Stonehill."

"The Lord changed my heart. I began to see a bigger world as a new Christian. I was before that time caught up in my own interests as a musician. I began to see others in a new way. I developed an appreciation for older and wiser believers as well and desired to learn from them. I also felt an awakened sense of compassion for the hurting and the lost among my own generation. The Bible became my most cherished possession. Before that it was my guitar. I experienced a new conscience and a desire to please God. Redemption became a reality to me and influenced my everyday decisions."

"I was by no means a perfect example of Christ, but I knew God was with me and guided me, disciplined me as a loving Father and gave me strength to grow in Him. I was hopeful to use my talents to bring good news to the world in which I lived—still desire that today."

How were you led by the Lord to use the artist’s musical gifts to write and sing songs? (A question of interest from our younger readers, and one that is fascinating to me as well)

"Early on in my Christian walk, I use to constantly put special scripture verses to music and sing them. Recently I have done this with Micah 6:8 on the Dream Again CD."

"I would also love to create a whole CD of Psalms put to music. His Word is life giving and so very encouraging. The Lord puts the song in our hearts. I, on the other hand know that there’s a lot of me in there, because , surely, not all I create is entirely inspired."

“Well I’m only one of countless thousands who have walked along Pilgrim’s way…”

"Saint Francis said, 'Preach the Gospel, and if necessary, use words'. I believe that has to do with living out the Gospel."

"As far as music goes, I also know that instrumental music can be used by God to reach someone, or to break up the hard ground of their heart. We are to see His hand in all things as we know that He is the Master Builder- The Author and Finisher of our faith."

Any life-molding experiences you would like to share with us, which were pleasant or were difficult, but molded your thinking, music, Christian walk, outlook on life etc.

"I lost my middle finger on my right hand as a child-age 5 I think, and that was a small hurtle in my life. Playing music helped me go forward any way."

"As a child, my family moved quite a lot, so I lacked a sense of local roots. Fortunately, my mother’s love was a constant. Dad was busy being the bread winner and provider. He was a good father and was a man of principal. I am proud to have known him. He was in the 2nd World War and that made his life difficult and complex. He did encourage me in my music continually, but I feel mom was the one who really took the time for me in helping with my early bookings and such."

"My old bandmates were very close friends and are to this day. Glass Harp is the band I was in between 1968 and 1972, but till this day we still play music together, record--pray and have a good time."

" I have also been involved with Compassion International, and traveling to developing countries has really opened my eyes to the great need to share our resources and blessings with others."

Any personal testimony you would like to share to encourage others, what the Lord has done for you?

"I am a sinner saved by grace. God’s grace is there for all to receive—His forgiveness has been offered because of the sacrifice of His Son Jesus—our Lord. O Taste and See the Lord IS Good! Ps 34:8 Day by day His love reaches me and He will keep us all as we trust Him—and when we feel like we can’t go on, He is there to lift and strengthen and provide grace. I believe that in being humble in His sight will ensure His compassionate response to our need."

About Your Music....

What inspires you to compose?

"Many things –faith, family, time, nature a particular guitar or melody—maybe a groove—sometimes a poem, sometimes a movie—friends."

How do you compose?

"Usually with pen in hand—a guitar in hand or nearby—to a tape recorder ( older times) –an iPod—a laptop…. The steering wheel in the car—in the shower (not really)."

Do you compose on the piano or guitar or both?

"Mostly guitar, but occasionally I have composed on a keyboard. That’s not too often though."

What is your creative process?

"Get an idea—a melody and take the time to bring it to life. I also collaborate with others on occasion—that really helps. My music room has lots of songs in it waiting to come out.. Lately, I’ve been putting music to audio books or creating soundtrack music. I hope to do more of that in the future. I record primarily to Pro Tools ( a computer based recording program) I have also record with friends through the mail or public folders—great opportunities and save on travel. I prefer to record at home in my studio room."

Do you hear the melody first in your head, or do you find melodies or ideas from just jamming or fiddling around, from observing life around you or in some other way?

"Both—actually. I also improvise a lot. Many instrumental songs were recorded “on the fly”. Check out ACOUSTIC SKETCHES 1&2, ROUNDABOUT and JAMMED."

From jamming together with a co-writer or musicians?

"Yes and alone as well. I use a devise called a Jamman and can create my own backing loops this way. There is, however, a totally different dynamic from playing with other musicians. I recently played with Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta (of Peter Gabriel). The music was improvised and very fresh at the same time."

Are responsibilities divided?… (Someone contributes to the lyrics, someone else creates the composition).

"Yes that happens. Recently Randy Stonehill and I have written songs or have reworked older songs. He is a gifted lyricist, but we also both collaborate on the music ideas. We are presently creating a new CD together. I’ve also written with Paul Overstreet ( only twice really), but to watch him work is amazing. He has a sharp mind and a quick wit."

Any favorite Songs?

"Each song on the new CD, DREAM AGAIN became a favorite while I was working on that individual piece. There are many reasons why a particular tune becomes special. Many important people in my life are linked to these songs. So I, at the moment, have no such favorite. There are stronger and weaker songs, but each song holds a special meaning."

What instrument did you use to get the wonderful sound on the Micah 6:8 SONG?

"That sound on Micah 6:8 is a marimba setting on my old Korg O1W."

* * * * + + DREAM AGAIN - Words and Music by Phil Keaggy - sebastian boy music (ASCAP)

Phil Keaggy comments to Christianmusic.com: "Dream Again was inspired by the encouragement of a brother in Asia who sent a message through a mutual friend saying, "Tell Phil I'm praying for him and the Lord wants him to dream again". That was very encouraging as I was leaving the music business and management as I knew then and embarking on becoming solely independent as an artist."

Lyrics:

Ready with a pen in hand, I'm / Wondering why I haven't slept, well / I've had a lot on my mind / And it shows it shows / I must let go of all these distractions / Leave them far behind and dream again. //

And when I wake up smiling / the world's a different place / Only when I choose / Only when I use my eyes / To see your beautiful face. //

Chorus: If ever I'm upside down / Whenever I'm turned around I will pray / If ever I lose my step. / If ever I should forget / I will, I will pray. //

Ready with these open hands I'm / Turning them upside down, cause I must let go of all these reactions / leave them far behind and dream again //

Chorus: And when I wake up smiling / the world's a different place / Only when I choose / Only when I use my eyes / To see your beautiful face //

Chorus: If ever I'm upside down / Whenever I'm turned around I will pray / If ever I lose my step. / If ever I should forget / I will, I will pray //

* * * * + WHY - Words and Music by Phil Keaggy - sebastian boy music (ASCAP)
Lead vocals by Ian Keaggy

Phil comments to Christianmusic.com,: "The song “Why” was conceived as a potential spot for a TV ad but was declined, so I worked over the song and invited my son Ian to do the verses. I also brought in real drums and additional BGVs on the song."

"We also made a low budget video of the track featuring Ian and the band. It can be viewed on You Tube under Keaagy/Why/Compassion. The video highlights images of children in 3rd world countries where Compassion International has reached out to help these kids. The song asks various questions that have to do with the problems in our world and that God has given us the resources to help ease the suffering by reaching out in love."

Scriptural References: (John 15:16-17, 1 John 4:19-21, James 1:22-25)

Lyrics:

Why is upside turning down / Why are all these people runnin' round / Why are nations in a rage / And selfish dictators on the stage / Why is this planet hungry for war / Who has the right to shut the door / On the poverty-stricken child I see / Why can't we help them you and me / Why does the media glorify / All the bad news / turn a blind eye / To the good unselfish things people do / You're asking me / I'm asking you //

Chorus: W.H.Y. Why don't we / Lift our brother in humanity / W.H.Y. Can't we be / Loving more - living free. //

Why are we rushing so fast / To things we know that just can't last / Why are we slipping into debt / For things we can't pay / And leave us with regret / Why oh why do do we ask and cry / Here in the streets and in our minds / Where do all the answers lie / It's in you and me, we have to try / Why is all around the city / It's in the country now, isn't it a pity / But still we ask what we can do / The answer lives in me and you. //

Chorus: W.H.Y. Why don't we / Lift our brother in humanity / W.H.Y. Can't we be / Loving more - living free //

Why oh why do do we ask and cry / Here in the streets and in our minds / Where do all the answers lie / It's in you and me, we have to try. //

Tag: Why-is all around the city / Why-is all around the country / The answer lives in me and you //

Chorus: W.H.Y. Why don't we / Lift our brother in humanity / W.H.Y. Can't we be / Loving more - living free. //

* * * * + + REDEMPTION - Music by Phil Keaggy and Lyrics by Todd Albertson

Phil comments to Christianmusic.com, "Redemption's lyrics were also penned by my friend Todd Albertson. I combined two of his poems to create this song. I wrote the song and demoed it while out in California on a trip. The vocal I sang was recorded in a small cottage room in Carmel. I then transferred the tracks and rerecorded guitars, bass and drums in my home studio. The words speak of the reality of redemption in contrast to our insistence of being in the right. There is a line that is a quote from George McDonald~~" It is that place where all that is not music is silence". So the song speaks of redemption and the wonders of all good things bestowed by the Lamb of God.

Scriptural References: (Romans 14:10-15, Ephes. 4:2B-3 & 22-24)

Lyrics:

Chorus: Do I want to be right or be redeemed? / Will I be brilliant at the cost of being obscene? / There is a life in this world / And then the other side / Time and space are curved by sin / And might and pride / Do I want to be right or be redeemed? /

Through my eyes is the power of punishent / To not look or recognize / Is the same as looking in judgement / Every action / Every thought is alive / Whether slave or free, artist or scribe / We are all here for each other you see / Not to be uniform but to live in unity. //

It is a glorious debt, I can never repay / it is an unending wet I cannot dry away / It is a joyous heart beating / Through the din of alone / It is a defeat retreating / And turning to stone / It's the darkness of night relinquishing power / To the roar of the dawn / Its a thousand spring flowers bursting into song / It is the deafening quiet just before the storm / the lion of love without shape without form / It is that place where all that is not music is silence / It is redemption //

Chorus: Do I want to be right or be redeemed? / Will I be brilliant at the cost of being obscene? / There is a life in this world / And then the other side / Time and space are curved by sin / And might and pride / Do I want to be right or be redeemed? /

* * * * + + THANKYOU FOR TODAY - Music by Phil Keaggy and Lyrics by Todd Albertson

Phil Keaggy comments: "THANK YOU FOR TODAY is a poem of a friend of mine--Todd Albertson. The words say it with the melody better than I can actually describe right now. Suffice it to say it's about gratitude for living in the moment--a gift from God."

Scriptural References: (1 Thess. 5:16-18, 1 Peter 5:7, Matt. 6:34 & 11:28-30)

Lyrics:

Chorus: Thank You for today / I am grateful, for today is all I have // Repeat

The past is much too heavy for me to carry / If I hold on to it for too long / You know it will crush me / The future is way too fragile for me to worry / If I hold on to it for too long / You know it will rush me //

Bridge: Right now is where You live / Right now is where I want to live //

Chorus: Thank You for today / I am grateful, for today is all I have // Repeat

In the past I am a fool, I play the fool / If I stay in that place too long / Dreams surrender to regret / In the future I'm a clown, a selfish clown / If I stay in that place for too long / to love another I neglect /Right now, there is no temptation / Right now, there is only faith. //

Chorus: Thank You for today / I am grateful, for today is all I have. // Repeat

Brodge:Right now is where You live / Right now is where I want to live. //

Thank You for today / I am grateful, for today is all I have.//

God, I need the wind to blow now / Through this flesh I need to know now / Your rest, I need show You I believe in You / These days, as I'm getting on in years now / Have their challenges and fears now / though I doubt myself, I still believe in You. //

* * * * + + MICAH 6:8 - Words and Music by Phil Keaggy - sebastian boy music (ASCAP)
Female vocals by Alicia Keaggy

Phil comments on his website: "I recorded this 4 years ago and asked my daughter Alicia to sing the refrain, which is the scripture, 'He has told you O man, what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God”. That’s one of my favorite tracks on the album. It has a Caribbean vibe to it in one part, and then has Les Paul solo on it.'

Phil comments on his website: "I wrote this song for my sister Kathy, who’s been through a lot in her life, 60 years old now, and she’s a sweet lady who’s had a lot of pain in her life, and I wanted to write her this song to tell her how much I love her."

You're turning 60 / but that is not so bad / I'm not too far behind you / There's no reason to be sad / Or spirits are ever young / Our true selves will never wane / For in the light of eternity / We've nothing to lose and all to gain //

You've given love to the old and the young / You're a brave soul in the tradition of our mom / Took care of Dad when he was so very weak / You have a heart of the loving and the meek / You've endured the pain / Of both heart and limb / And you reflect God / In the way that you see Him /

* * * * + + ITS YOU AND ME (For Bernadette) - Words and Music by Phil Keaggy - sebastian boy music (ASCAP)

Phil comments on his website: "I was in Couer D’Alene, Idaho ,and I was getting really sick with the flu. As I was beginning to feel terrible, I was penning these lyrics to Bernadette, while I was 2000 miles away. The title comes from a longer title from something she said, “It’s a good thing we love each other because in the end it’s just you and me”, and that has to do with being empty nesters. I thought I’d just put my thoughts, love and dedication to Bernadette. The song has a bit of an Elvis feel to it – not that I sound like Elvis but I was feeling like Elvis!"

When I'm with you, I feel younger / I feel stronger, take me to that special place / When I'm with you / When I hold you such a sweetness / This completeness / See my reflection in your face / When I hold you //

Out in the world, confidence I lack / I can't wait to hurry back to your arms again / From the fifth floor blacony I cam see so far / I would rather be back in your arms and then.//

Chorus: You speak to me softly that you love me / Speak to me softly that you care / It's a good thing we love each other / Cause in the end it's just you and me my dear. / /

Love of my life, of my soul / I am whole just to know you're there / Love of my life / Girl of my dreams, the home we share / Is always where you are / Waiting for my return, girl of my dreams //

Out in the world, confidence I lack / I can't wait to hurry back to your arms again / From the fifth floor blacony I cam see so far / I would rather be back in your arms and then. //

You speak to me softly that you love me / You speak to me softly that you care / Well it's a good thing we love each other / Cause in the end it's just you and me my dear / You speak to me softly that you love me / You speak to me softly that you care / Well it's a good thing we love each other / Cause in the end it's just you and me my dear. //

* * * * + + HOW CAN I THANK YOU (For Sister Mary Ellen) - sebastian boy music (ASCAP)

Phil comments on his website: "This was written to my other sister, Mary Ellen for leading me to the Lord 46 years ago, the week following my mom’s tragic car accident, which took her life. She was an actress in Hollywood for a number of years in the 50’s and 60’s. She has always been a special lady and then when she got the Lord in her life, she was even more beautiful, more radiant. She’s the one who led me to a personal faith in Jesus!"

Lyrics:

Even when as a boy / My heart would leap for joy / To be along side of you / In from Hollywood back to Hubbard / A grand reunion took place / Happy in your presence / This little boy would smile / Just at the sight of you / Mom and Dad were proud / Sisters and Brothers / No doubts, and so was I. //

Still we had some growing up to do / The first to grow was you / Into the Kingdom / Out of the shadows and into the light / You made the great escape / Tragedy touched us all / We were grief stricken / And all motherless children / God took her soul to heaven / But gave us comfort and heard our cry. //

At that very tender time there was you / Your hand in mine, it was you / Your face a shine with a glow not of this world / Over these many years still i am indebted to you / Oh I've said it none too many a time / That I love you. //

And how can I thank you / How can I thank you - thank you. //

Mary Ellen I'm still a boy at heart / I sing for joy at the very thought of you / So from Tennessee to Arizona / My heart reaches over this country great / Memories of that day when you took time / For me to pray changed my life forever / I've still got a ways to go / But I wanted ou to know I'll always remember ..

At that very tender time there was you / Your hand in mine, it was you / Your face a shine with a glow not of this world / Over these many years still i am indebted to you / Oh I've said it none too many a time / That I love you. //

And how can I thank you, how can I thank you, / How can I thank you - and I love you //

* * * * + + LOVE IS THE REASON (For Robin and Keith) - sebastian boy music (ASCAP)

Phil comments on his website:"I wrote this as a wedding song for Robin and Keith Mawdsley. When I write these songs as gifts to people, I don’t think about them going on an album. But this album, which originally started off being an album of love songs, kind of ended up being an album of mostly love songs with a few other songs of emphasis about the gospel, about trusting God, about living together with humanity, and I thought it made a good mix. This is one of the more lush arrangements and productions on the album, and I think it’s a fitting closing tune. I’m very proud of how it turned out. Some musicians on this song were Tom Howard on keyboard, Jonathan Willis on string arrangements, Mike Radovsky on drums, and I did all the vocals. It’s one of the sweeter songs I’ve written. I put this down with some of my favorites, such as “Under the Grace” and “Tender Love.”

Scriptural References: (1 Cor. 13 & 16:14, Prov.18:22 & 3:3)

Lyrics:

Love is the reason for us now / This is the season for us now / This is our time, our moment in the sun. //

Trust is the key to our home, Love / This is our freedom and joy, Love / This is our time, the time new life's begun //

All is renewed in the springtime / All is reborn in His time / Meeting you brought me the healing I needed / I am yours and you are mine. //

Never knew this could happen / Never a clue this would happen / This long awaited moment in the sun /

Faith is the door we now enter / Always before us we center / Our vision, our purpose / Together as one /

All is renewed / in the springtime / All is reborn in His time / Meeting you brought me the healing I needed / I am yours and your are mine. //

God is so good I remember / The touch of His love / Of His grace / All that I longed for / All that I dreamed for / I found revealed in your face. //

Love is the reason for us now / This is the season for us now / This is our time, our moment in the sun //

All is renewed in the springtime / All is reborn in His time / Meeting you brought me the healing I needed / I am yours and your are mine. //
