HIGH SCHOOL CHECKLIST BY GRADE

9th grade:

 

  • PSAT in October - sign up in August at a local public or private school
  • As soon as first high school level course is completed, put on transcript
  • Log community service hours for Bright Futures eligibility (can start summer before 9th grade)
  • Log any achievements, awards, honors, prizes, etc. received
  • Incorporate Test Prep based on PSAT scores (Khan Academy is free)
  • Practice essay writing (for college apps & scholarship apps)

 

10th grade:

  • PSAT in October - sign up in August at a local public or private school
  • Update transcript with grades, credits
  • Calculate a GPA for 9th grade
  • Add scores from tests (PSAT, PERT, AP, CLEP)
  • Update community service hours
  • Log achievements, awards, etc.
  • Incorporate Test Prep
  • Practice essay writing (for college apps & scholarship apps)

 

11th grade:

  • PSAT in October - NMS Qualifier - sign up in August at a local public or private school
  • Incorporate test prep – take first SAT or ACT in Fall or Spring of 11th grade (get waiver)
  • Practice essay writing (use Coalition & Common App Essay prompts)
  • Start narrowing down a field of interest (if possible)
  • Research possible colleges / schools / careers
  • Add courses, credits, grades to transcript
  • Calculate a GPA for 10th grade and cumulative
  • Log community service hours
  • Log achievements, awards, prizes, honors, etc.
  • Plan enrichment activities for summer (internship, camp experience, travel)
  • Start Coalition and Common Apps if applying to college
  • College visits help focus planning, schedule early

 

12th grade:

  • Take SAT or ACT tests starting in June or August (get waiver)
  • Complete FAFSA October 1
  • Update transcript with 11th grade courses, grades, credits
  • Calculate GPA for 11th grade and cumulative GPA
  • Update transcript with mid-year grades in December, send to colleges/universities
  • Gather recommenders for college applications, jobs
  • Visit colleges, arrange for admissions interviews
  • Send applications to colleges/universities Nov/Dec
  • Register for SAT/ACT testing in Spring if needed
  • Complete FSFA Application for Bright Futures
  • Complete volunteer hours for Bright Futures by June 30th
  • Send volunteer hours to county for Bright Futures
  • Plan an internship/job for summer
  • Register for graduation (ex. Jan 1st for FPEA)
