Security guard license process

To obtain a security guard license in Ontario, follow these steps:

  1. Meet Eligibility Requirements: You must be at least 18 years old, legally entitled to work in Canada, and have a clean criminal record.

  2. Complete Training: Enroll in a basic training course for security guards. The course must be from a training entity approved by the Ministry of the Solicitor General in Ontario and typically includes 40 hours of instruction covering topics like legal authorities, health and safety, communication, and emergency response.

  3. Pass the Test: After completing the training, you must pass the ministry’s security guard test. The test is administered by Serco DES Inc. on behalf of the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

  4. Apply for the License: Once you pass the test, apply for your security guard license through ServiceOntario. This can be done online or by mail. You’ll need to provide your training and test completion documents, along with your personal information and a recent photo.

  5. Undergo a Background Check: As part of the licensing process, you will need to undergo a criminal background check. This is to ensure that you do not have any convictions that would disqualify you from becoming a security guard.

  6. Pay the Fee: There is a fee for the license application, which must be paid when you submit your application.

  7. Receive Your License: Once your application is processed and approved, you will receive your Ontario security guard license, which you must carry while on duty.

It's essential to keep your license valid by renewing it every two years and completing any required continuing education or training during that time.
