Sight

The key was to see it. That's what they needed me for. If you could see it you knew you could get light to it - light and any other wavelengths you wanted. Energy, light, communication - on the far side. It had to be on the far side.

It’s what fascinated me about those birds for all those years. Watching them dive and come up with a fish every time. Those red eyes blinking. The secret of those eyes will probably die with me. They never let me publish a paper.

You are standing in a fixed position, starting at one side of a stone. How can you, without changing your position, stare with perfect clarity at the side facing away from you?

Loons find their prey by sight. They eat mainly fish, supplemented with amphibians, crustaceans and similar mid-sized aquatic fauna. Specifically, they have been noted to feed on crayfish, frogs, snails, salamanders and leeches. They prefer clear lakes because they can more easily see their prey through the water.

Orthoscopy: used in optics and vision for the condition of normal, distortion-free view, from "ortho", straight, right, correct, and "scope", seeing.
