Prey
Calling us loons was my idea. A foolish acronym. Something playful to keep away the loneliness.
It consumes us. I see that now. A secret too large to keep, when kept, plunges its keeper into darkness.
She is my only light. At least I can talk to her every month. When the light is right.
And now one of them is taking it away. Maybe more, but it always starts with one. A network as fragile as ours - that’s the weakness, of course. Find out who the loons are on the government side, you take them out, and there’s simply no means of reconstituting the chain.
They must see that. That’s why they’re breaking it. Which they? Those outside us? Or could it be a they within the we?
Hard to believe I’m in charge now. Foremost loon. So many we’ve lost. So much we’ve forgotten.
I hope she’s still OK up there. I worry about her until we talk.
The loon uses its pointy bill to stab or grasp prey. They eat vertebrate prey headfirst to facilitate swallowing, and swallow all their prey whole.
