Stamping Die Components: Types & Function
press die

The stamping die usually has a fixed section and the movable section. Fixed sections are made up of clamp plate and screw to attach to the worktable of punch press or lower die. The movable sections are fixed on the slider of punch press, which called the upper die. Then the upper die move upwards and downwards using the sliders in order to carry out the stamping work.

The components can be divided into five kinds based on their role.

Working components

The working press die components, are the parts which will be used in stamping work. First, deform the sheet of metal, and then separate it. Next, get the stamping piece. Like punch inserts, die inserts, punch-matrix etc.

Pilot components

Pilot components are used to regulate the direction of feed for raw materials and pitch, as well as ensure that the raw material sheet is in the right position for the stamping machine. Such as pilot pin, locating pin, guide pin, dowel pin, dowel plate, side clamp plate etc.

Components for material pressing as well as lifting:

These parts are used to make sure that the piece and scraps are removed from the tool following every stamping process. This will make production simpler when the next time comes around. For example: Stripper plate, lifting pin, scrap cutting inserts etc.

Guide components

These components ensure that stamping dies are aligned in the right direction during their relative motion. They also ensure that the punch and die inserts have clear clearance. This improves the quality of the stamping components.

Install and secure components

These progressive mold components functions are to join over four stamping die components joint together, to ensure each tool component's relative position is accurate and in the correct position and ensure that the tool can be installed on the punch press.

But, of course, that doesn't the case that each stamping tool should have above 5 type of components for the die. To reduce validation time and reduce costs, certain stamping equipment are able to be simplified by using only the working parts.

Use of Different Stamping Die Components

1. Guide Plate Components

Principal purpose: Direct the strip of raw material to the right location prior to inserting it into the tool. The strip should be parallel to the tool.

2. Punch and Die Components

These components are the principal working components in tool used to cut, pierce, forming, bending etc.

The inserts are manufactured out of carbide material, which is hard and can be used to produce high-precision and large quantities. This can help guarantee stamping die manufacturers accuracy and long-lasting longevity.

3. Stripper Plate Inserts

The tool components are placed in the stripper plate and used for accuracy guide punches, which are easy to adjust the tool. There are three types of structures that include shoulder type, screw-fix type and double layer type. Shoulder type is most well-known.

4. Pilot Pin and the Misfeeder Detection Device

The purpose of the pilot pin is to create an error strip prior to the time that tool 1 station works. The mis-feeder also stops the tool from closing while it's not feeding. This can help shield the tool from injury.

5. Main Guide Pillar and Guide Bush, and Sub-guide Pillar and Bush

Above the stamping die components, all of them are common parts serve as tool guides. When working on stamping dies typically, you will use the main guide pillar and post to make a initial guide. Then, use the sub-guide pillar and post to create precise guiding that will ensure the entire precision of the tool set.

6. Limit Bolt

This feature is intended to prevent tool damage and die shut height not being set correctly. It can also protect the inserts as well as tools.

7. Guide Pin

The guide pin is employed to guide the material when it is being fed into molds. It can also be used for material stripping.

8. Clamp Screw

The function of the clamp screw is to fix the various components of the die together, providing tight locking force to make the tool be stable while pressurizing force.

9. Connect the Screw

The spring inside the tool is usually a screw, which is connected to springs inside the tool. This may decrease spring compression under force and also alter the precompression height.

10. Stripper Spring and Stripper Screw

The inner thread type is employed for the stripper screw. It can be employed to secure stripper plates, and to disassemble them. The stripper spring provides enough tension and pulling force to stripper plate.
