Tips and Strategies for IELTS Exam

Studying abroad can be both difficult and thrilling, especially when it comes to studying in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is a popular and desirable destination for international students pursuing higher education. The British university education system is well-known around the world. International students whose first language is not English must take an English proficiency test at one of the top UK universities. When studying for the IELTS, students frequently inquire about the simplest IELTS test to pass.

To gain admission to UK universities, students must meet certain standards. One of the best things about UK institutions is that if you don't get into one department, you can apply to another right away. If you want to study in the United Kingdom, you'll need a high IELTS score. The exam consists of four parts, each of which must be taken seriously in order to get admitted to a top university. Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking are the four sections.

What is IELTS?

The British Council established the International English Language Teaching System (IELTS) in 1989. The IELTS score is accepted by universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia. In all 140 countries, there are 1200 IELTS testing facilities. Tests are given four times a month, for a total of 48 times per year. IELTS costs roughly $225 on average, though the price varies according on the test center's location.

IELTS is well-known among students for its paper-based format, however, due to the growing epidemic, students can also take a computer-based test. The IELTS test is not only approved by international colleges but also by governmental bodies and businesses in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and other English-speaking nations.

Classification of IELTS Test

As the article mentioned prior, IELTS is classified into four different skills. They are:

1. IELTS Reading:

The reading section is crucial for test takers since they must demonstrate their reading ability as well as their patience level on this test. In addition, this portion is specifically developed to assess several aspects of reading ability. For instance, after reading a passage, understanding the key idea, summarizing, and recognizing the author's point of view and perspective. Students must answer 40 questions from three passages.

In addition, there are three lengthy and detailed portions in the reading section. These excerpts came from a range of places, including scholarly publications, news stories, and articles from newspapers, periodicals, and academic journals. Furthermore, because the academic IELTS is only for prospective students, the university level of difficulty is maintained in these areas. The following are some IELTS reading tips:

  • Familiar with reading Questions: Students will find approximately 14 types of questions in the reading test. Some question types have responses that are presented in a sequential manner, while others do not. As a result, if students are familiar with the questions prior to taking the exam, they will do well on it.
  • Scanning and Skimming: It is highly essential for students to have a clear idea about how to skim and scan a passage. Moreover, it is necessary to know to get a good score on a test like IELTS. Skimming a passage involves reading it quickly to gain a rough notion of what it’s about. Scanning, on the other hand, refers to one’s ability to quickly identify information and has nothing to do with comprehension of the passage.
  • Need not to Understand the Full Content: In the IELTS test, it is not required to understand the full content. The student's job is to pick the correct answer from the reading passages. Only two sorts of questions (header matching and title selection) may necessitate further information.
  • Boost Your Vocabulary Knowledge: Students often ask, "How can I score 8 in IELTS reading?’ Vocabulary skills are one of the primary reasons why students do not achieve good reading scores. Furthermore, students must understand that mastering vocabulary is more than merely memorizing new words. Learners must understand when and how to utilize certain words.
  • Pick Out Your Weaknesses: Students will not be able to improve their flaws if they are unable to identify them. As a result, students should spend time reviewing their work.

2. IELTS Listening:

The IELTS listening section, like the reading section, is divided into four sections. It will be a 30-minute test with a 10-minute break at the conclusion for pupils to transfer their answers to the writing pad. The following are some IELTS listening skills tips:

  • Listen Carefully: The students will be able to listen to the recording only once, during the test. There isn’t going to be a second chance. As a result, students must practice taking a whole listening test while simply listening once. When students are honing their skills and expanding their vocabulary, they may need to listen more than once, which is perfectly acceptable throughout the practice session.
  • Enlarge Your Guessing Power: There’s a good chance that students won’t grasp the recording completely. In that situation, they’ll have to make a guess. Furthermore, students should not leave any vacant boxes; instead, they should guess the word and write it in the box.

3. IELTS Writing:

The correctness and grammatical meaning of students' English language will be assessed in the IELTS writing section. The most challenging element of this component is putting your thoughts, beliefs, and understanding of the assignment into words. The following are some IELTS writing test tips:

  • Writing Task 1: Only 33% of overall writing scores are met by it. Students will be graded on task completion (25%), coherence and cohesion (25%), vocabulary (25%), and grammar (25%).
  • Writing Task 2: It corresponds to 66% of total writing scores. This task requires students to produce an academic or formal essay. Opinion, discussion, advantages and disadvantages, argumentative, and other forms of essays are common.

4. IELTS Speaking:

The IELTS speaking section is divided into three sections. The interviewer assesses the interviewee's ability to talk at all three levels of the interview. The interviewer will assess the applicant's fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and coherence. There are three phases to the IELTS speaking test tips:

  • Phase 1: The examiner will introduce him/ her at the very beginning of the test and will expect the same from you. Later on, the examiner will ask some primary questions to break the ice between you two. The topics can be related to your home, office, school, neighborhood, etc.
  • Phase 2: The examiner will provide you with a task card and you will speak for a certain number of minutes on the topic written on the card. You’ll have 1 to 2 minutes to speak on this subject. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking.
  • Phase 3: The last phase will last for 3- 4 minutes. The examiner will ask some additional questions related to the previous phase. You’ll be answered more abstractly in this phase.

Tips for IELTS Preparation

-Pay attention to talks, particularly English news bulletins. Pay attention to speeches and jot down notes. You should also participate in group conversations and practice listening to multiple individuals at once. This preparation will go a long way towards assisting you in passing the listening section.

-To do well in the reading portion, practice reading long articles, stories, and essays. Make a list of everything you think is significant. Work on your comprehension skills. There are no negative markings, so you can tackle all of the questions.

-To breeze through the writing section, practice writing essays. Your essays must also be error-free, so brush up on your grammar. Stick to your point of view and use formal language.

-To earn a decent score in the speaking segment, you must be fluent. At home, practice speaking and make sure your pronunciation is crisp and confident. Prepare yourself since you will be interacting with an invigilator in real time.
