The three longest dotted lines are where bearing walls will be replaced with beams to open the space up.
The bath already exists, but it needs to be shortened up to create the larger bar area. It's been a couple of weeks for me now so here's what's going on.
Here's what it will look like. The three longest dotted lines are where bearing walls will be replaced with beams to open the space up. The bath already exists, but it needs to be shortened up to create the larger bar area. It's been a couple of weeks for me now so here's what's going on.
The old central bedroom. Jay and Trav have demo'ed most of the ceiling and all the wall paneling.
Here's the paneling and a funky glass block feature that was between the hall and garage.
Here's a sample of what we're starting with. Some existing ducting running back to the bath area plus a furnace flue sticking out of the furnace room. It all has to be moved because we're going to be using this space.
The outside of the bath wall complete with funky plumbing runs.
I'll be taking the water lines out so we can install the new bath door in the upper left wall shown here. New water lines will come down from the main trunk lines in the celing, as they should have been.
And here they are capped off.
A lot of stuff went off to the dump. Not the local one, they charge $42 minumum. I take it back home where it starts at $16. Here I'm loaded up with carpet and pad with some paneling as a cover.
The old wall between the bedroom and hall has its own funkiness. The original header for a door was boarded up and a new opening, with a totally inadequate header, was put in. In the background are 2x4s nailed into a block wall that will also have to come down. We're going to be using real walls.
I also took down the closets and the side wall of the bath. The new bath wall will be even with the end of the bathtub - which you can just almost maybe see to the lower right.
This wall of the bath had a 3'x8' mirror on it. I took the wallboard off the wall, with the mirror still attached, from the back side - but the mirror fell off and busted up. I was glad I was on the other side of the wall. And believe it or not - this is a load bearing wall.
Taking down the closets and bath walls created more trash.
Along with a couple of 4' vanities.
And still more trash. Time for another cleanup.
Another load to the dump. I think there were five altogether.
Bonus Alert!
Last weekend we babysat the grandkids. Here's Reagan in the back yard.
Reagan and Isaac at play rolling stones down the shed's ramp.
Nice Pic. I catch both Reagan and Issac airborne!
Working up a sweat . . . . . . and now it's back to work.
With the trash gone, it's on to fixing the duct work. All this stuff coming off the sides or bottom must be relocated to the top to give us maximum headroom. And that furnace flue in the rear needs to get out of out our new living space.
Here I redirected the flue inside the furnace room, through the upper corner of the bath and then up to the chimney.
There are lots of side ducts to move. Those on the right are going right through where the new beams will be located to hold up the first floor.
I started by removing the old ducts and patching the holes with sheet metal - caulked, taped and screwed in place. Eventually, all the old insulation came off too.
Do you think this old connection leaked much?
New connections were made on the top.
The room's wall jogs out here so I cut the old plenum run, moved the cut section over to where the new wall will be and made up a connector between the two. Sue came along that day to help and made this possible. The connector is made of foil coated foam board with sheet metal sides which were glued and taped together. The ends were screwed, glued and taped to each plenum end. It made a very sturdy connector when the glue set up.
Here's the new plenum run with the connections up top.
This part of the run is done. All the connections are up top leaving a wide open ceiling space. Later, a soffitt will enclose the plenum.
Now I'm insulating all the exposed plenum and ducts. I replaced the old insulation with new stuff.
These last ducts are now on this side of that second beam and are fully insulated.
This area will be the home theater, with nice high ceilings.
And here I'm taking a break for Labor Day, and Reagan's Birthday. Next week we start replacing the bearing walls with beams.
