Looking for a furry friend ?

Application process for York County SPCA satellite at Hanover PetSmart

In addition to the cats here at Hanover PetSmart, there are many homeless animals waiting for a family. We would like to help you find your new furrever friend.

Preapproved applications are suggested. If you are interested in adopting a pet but have not decided on which one, we suggest completing and application for preapproval. An approved application will be kept on file for 6 months. Then, when you find that furry friend, you will be a step ahead having an application approved and less likely to miss out on the pet.

Applications are available at the adoption table at Hanover PetSmart. Please complete all information to expedite the reviewing process. If there is no volunteer available, you may put the application under the cat room door. It will be processed by the next volunteer that comes in. Make sure all information is legible especially the email address. Please monitor your emails – you will receive an initial email from us (yorkcountyspca@gmail.com) – please reply to this email so we know it is received.

The adoption center at Hanover PetSmart is staffed by volunteers. If you would like to visit with a cat please email yorkcountyspca@gmail.com to make arrangements to meet. Please note that PetSmart staff are not able to show the cats in the adoption center.

There are other animals posted online at www.yorkcountyspca.wix.com/yorkcountyspcacats If you see any that you may be interested in, complete an application and annotate the cat's name and location. Your application will be processed and you will be contacted by a York County SPCA representative about the status of the application. If you have questions about a pet that you see, email yorkcountyspca@gmail.com or the contact person listed with the cat's information.

Applications may also be completed online through www.ycspca.org. There have been occasions where applications have been lost by the server. Once you submit your application you will receive a confirmation. You can copy / paste this information into an email to yorkcountyspca@gmail.com stating that you have applied online. This way if the online application is not received, we can still contact you.

Approved Application

Adoption Process

You will receive notification from a York County SPCA rep as to the status of your application. For cats at Hanover PetSmart, this will likely be through an email from yorkcountyspca@gmail.com Please monitor your emails.

If you are adopting a cat at Hanover PetSmart, the adoption can be done at the Hanover PetSmart store. Arrangements will need to be made with a YCSPCA adoption volunteer by contacting yorkcountyspca@gmail.com. Please note that PetSmart staff cannot release cats from the adoption center.

You will need to bring:

  • valid driver's license. If the address on your license is not the same as your address on the application, you will need to bring something as proof of residence (such as a utility bill or something that officially has your name and address).

  • Check - Adoptions at Hanover PetSmart must be paid by a check (if you do not have a checking account, let the adoption volunteer know). If the name on the check is not that of the applicant, we must have the check holder's driver's license.

  • Carrier You must also bring a carrier for each adopted cat. No cats will leave without being in a carrier.

Adoptions are eligible for a PetSmart adoption packet. This includes a free bag of PetSmart food and numerous coupons. PetSmart will then donate to the York County SPCA for having a pet adopted through them. You can take your adoption contract from any adoption to PetSmart and ask a manager for an adoption packet.

If you adopting outside of Hanover PetSmart, you will be informed of the adoption procedures dependant on the location of the pet.

Thank you for considering adopting ! There are a lot of wonderful animals waiting for their furrever home.

PROCEDURES FOR ADOPTION:

The cats on this page are available for adoption through the York County SPCA.  Those that are listed at PetSmart in Hanover can be seen during business hours.  We are all volunteers so a YCSPCA representative may not be there for you to visit.

Check the calendar on the left panel for times that a YCSPCA volunteer may be in to clean and if they have time available, they can be asked to let you in to visit.  You may also email luvkatz@embarqmail.com to make arrangements for a time.  It is recommended to complete an application if you are considering a cat(s) so the review process can be started.  Because there are so many cats that need homes, the YCSPCA has a 2 Purr program where the adoption fee for a 2nd cat is waived.

Adoption applications are available at the adoption table in front of the cat windows.  You can also complete an application online at www.ycspca.org (sometimes the online server goes down so it is recommended to copy/paste the verification at the end of the online application and email the confirmation to yorkcountyspca@gmail.com.  I will then forward this information to the YCSPCA to alert them that the online application was sent.  If the server is down, they will still have your contact information to get hold of you).  Please complete all spaces even if not applicable.  Note the cat name and 5 digit # at the top of the form.  If a YCSPCA representative is not present, place your application under the cat room door and it will be picked up and processed by the next volunteer who comes in.  This application will then be reviewed by the York SPCA and someone from York County SPCA will contact you reference to the status of your application.

If you are interested in a particular type of cat, age of cat, personality, please annotate that information on the application.

Within the photo albums, you can enter a search term if you are looking for something specific (i.e. declawed, black, male).

With nearly 500 cats at the YCSPCA, there is likely one that will be a match for you.

Once your application is approved, you can either go to the YCSPCA on North Susquehanna Trail in York to complete the contract and pay the adoption fee or the adoption can be done at Hanover PetSmart by coordinating with an adoption volunteer.  If done at Hanover PetSmart, the payment must be done by check.   The cat (s) will remain at PetSmart for you to pick up.  Keep in mind that the shelter is closed on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.

There are some cats listed outside of PetSmart.  How to get further information on these cats is listed within the description of the cats.
There are many other cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, etc that are available for adoption and can be seen by visiting http://yorkcountyspca.wix.com/yorkcountyspcacats .

There are also applications for volunteering at Hanover PetSmart with the YCSPCA cats.  These applications can be found at the adoption table.  If there is no volunteer available in the cat room, place your application under the door to the catroom.

If you have any questions, please email yorkcountyspca@gmail.com
