5/18-6/11/2007: Brief Itinerary & Expenses
5/18-6/11/2007: Brief Itinerary & Expenses
Well, what do you know.....we were stood up by the 'golden handshake' program! The reorganization wasn't materialized as we had hoped. Hence Pravet decided to delay his early retirement further on while secretly keeps praying for a miracle to come!
Somehow the spirit of traveling has got into us. Memories of beautiful landscapes, the grandeur of medieval European castles, the exquisite art deco of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as the sacred aura of holy churches, allured us to yearn for more. So by February I was already outlining our return trip to Europe one more time.
Last year's experience helped a lot in refining our choices of hotel locations, i.e., sight/city center and with transportations in 'my' walking distance. Of course we had to pay a higher price but believe me, it's worth it. First off I had to establish our base, and since our nephew's in Munich, naturally this charming city was our center, and from there I mapped out our routes. I wish to reitertate here that the best transport for non-EU citizens (especially in our age group) traveling throughout Europe is no other than European Rail, better known as Eurail. Not only can you enjoy the extra benefits offered at reasonable prices, their train schedules are correlated and very flexible. Departures and arrivals are available at every 1 or 2 hours, to say the least, not to mention the varied connections that you can easily adjust to your preferred timings should any delays occur. To cite a few benefits: Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are treated as one country - BENELUX, a special discount rate for traveling couple/group of 5, and attractive promotions every once in a while. Take this year for example, in March we bought Eurail Saver Select Pass, 1st class, for 3 adjoining countries for 7 days at a price of 6 days only! We thus had 7 days to travel to destinations of our choice within 5 countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg (the last 3 being counted as one). Check it out at www.railpass.com
Apart from Eurail Pass, Die Bahn (DB) or German Rail also offers attractive selections of tickets conducive to traveling within the same region/state, which in our case is the Bayern ticket. With Bayern ticket you can travel up to 5 persons at the same time at only € 27 per ticket which is much cheaper than individual tickets combined. It entitles you to travel to any city within Bavaria State on regional trains, 2nd class. Validity: M-F from 0900-0300 on the next day while Sa-Su and holidays, from midnight till 3 am the following day. Practically you can travel to nearby towns and return within the same day. Should you stay overnight then you need to buy another ticket for the return trip. Whichever way, Bayern ticket is the most economical choice. Next, I checked our timeline against our nephew's availability(apartment) and finally adjusted our itinerary to be as follows: Bangkok - Munich - Salzburg - Innsbruck - Cologne - Amsterdam - Brussels - Antwerp - Luxembourg - Cologne - Heidelberg - Munich - Prien am Chiemsee - Ingolstadt - Nuremberg - Wurzburg - Rothenburg - Wurzburg - Rudesheim am Rhein - Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Bangkok. We took off from Bangkok on 18 May and returned home on 11 June. Since this trip (25 days) lasted longer than last year, the photos taken were plentiful despite our slightly defected digital camera. It'll be months before I'm through with all the blogs. The finished ones are listed below with enabled links while the rest are being updated.
