Our Trip to Fort Donelson and the Hermitage

The confederate monument

Fort Donelson was a confederate for that blocked the Union off from most of the South.  Due to some pretty severe blunders by Confederate officers, they lost the Fort to Grant's ground troops after a Union gunboat attack down the Cumberland river (above) failed.  Had the Confederates held the fort (as they had it won, but misunderstood their standing and retreated, then surrendered), they would have had a good chance of winning the entire war, this being the gateway to the south.  After the union won this, they were able to take Nashville.

This is where the union gunboats came down the river and were fired upon by cannons

The hotel where a Confederate officer surrendered to Grant (a former friend and colleague)

This is the Hermitage - President Andrew Jackson's home

Love those brick houses; Andrew Jackson sure was a popular President; what was his nickname? (Old Hickory?)
