The confederate monument
Fort Donelson was a confederate for that blocked the Union off from most of the South. Due to some pretty severe blunders by Confederate officers, they lost the Fort to Grant's ground troops after a Union gunboat attack down the Cumberland river (above) failed. Had the Confederates held the fort (as they had it won, but misunderstood their standing and retreated, then surrendered), they would have had a good chance of winning the entire war, this being the gateway to the south. After the union won this, they were able to take Nashville.
