5/20-6/2/2006: Brief Itinerary & Expenses
Actually this trip came out of the blue. The last time we went abroad was in 1999. Pravet attended a workshop at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy and of course I tagged along. Then I became ill at year end followed by thymectomy in March 2000. Not long after, our dearest daughter was diagnosed with bone cancer and had surgery in August. Since then we stayed home most of the time recuperating. Times flew by and although our health conditions became stable, the idea of long traveling didn't come to mind, let alone going abroad!
Anyway, one fine morning after our 26th anniversary last March, I just teased Pravet about going abroad as a special treat to our (mostly his) long and hard working lives and he simply agreed to the idea! I contacted a travel agency and even booked a week tour to Europe. Unfortunately the plan had to be cancelled in light of my father's urgent colectomy. I thought the chance had come and passed us by and it might be years before we could really make another plan. However, earlier this year there was rumor about reorganization at Pravet's office and the possibility of 'golden handshake' to qualified retiring staff. Nothing's definite though and the final decision will be known after the General Conference in November. In good anticipation, Pravet signalled me to start materializing our cancelled trip. I took to his nod and went on planning. With my health condition in mind, we agreed to do the trip on our own, a half breed between the 'backpack' and the 'luxury'. I googled for interesting sights to visit and nice, convenient and affordable hotels to stay and after a month and a half, our program was ready.
Since this was our first trip abroad after I was diagnosed as Myasthenic (Myasthenia Gravis) so we didn't plan for travel in high altitudes nor on gradients nor where many steps are needed. Also since we didn't know how well I would do so we had a rather loose and adaptable schedule. Taking into account these limitations plus our age group, our program thus focussed mainly on museums and churches. Yet, a lesson was learned! Sight infos provided on internet aren't 3D, and '10-min walk' for Europeans could very well be ' 20 to half an hour' for a shorty Asian like me. So what actually happened was I had to skip many places. Details of the trip will be written separately in due time.
We flew by Austrian Airlines and used Eurail Network while in Europe. Our first stop was Switzerland where we spent 6 days visiting Geneva, Bern, Zurich, Interlaken, and Lucerne. Then we moved on to Vienna, Austria for another 3 days and wrapped up our trip by visiting our nephew in Munich, Germany for only 2½ days. The photo blogs are presented in that order.
