Commentaries

  1. BBC - A pure-hearted person is one whose motives are unmixed, whose thoughts are holy, whose conscience is clean. The expression they shall see God may be understood in several ways. First, the pure in heart see God now through fellowship in the Word and the Spirit. Second, they sometimes have a supernatural appearance, or vision, of the Lord presented to them. Third, they shall see God in the Person of Jesus when He comes again. Fourth, they shall see God in eternity.
  2. CBC - Purity of heart amounts to internal integrity that transparently manifests itself in outward behavior. Matthew presents certain Pharisees as models of an external, rule-oriented purity that Jesus rejected and condemned because it masked inner corruption (Cf. 15:1-20; 23:25-28). His disciples must possess an inner piety and purity that surpasses mere externally acceptable behavior (5:20-22, 27-28). They have experienced the power of the Kingdom, which purifies from the inside out. Thus, they must cultivate integrity in their private intellectual, emotional, and volitional lives (Cf. 5:28; 6:21; 9:4; 12:34; 15:8, 18, 19; 18:35; 22:37).

(5:9) Live in Peace with Everyone - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.  CSB
