Modafinil's Effect On Wakefulness
Modafinil (also called Provigil) is a central nerve stimulant that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat daytime sleepiness in patients suffering from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, shift-work disorder and Narcolepsy. It can also be misused without the need for a prescription.
Many people abuse cognitive-enhancing and psychostimulant drugs without prescription to boost productivity, reduce fatigue, or help with cognitive problems. But, the use of cognitive-enhancing substances like amphetamine, methylphenidate and modafinil are frequently used by students in college. About between 7% and 20% U.S. students have reported using the substances.
It is uncommon for other populations of individuals to abuse these substances as well. In Germany, for example, 8.9% reported that they'd taken cognitive-enhancing drugs without a prescription.
Modafinil is believed to be less addictive that other psychostimulants such as amphetamines. However, there are some indications that it can result in dependence or even abuse. Modafinil, however, can trigger some serious adverse effects and should be taken only when prescribed by a doctor.
