2007-06-07 Building the Pergola
Building the Pergola
We love our new Pergola! Here Kathy and Monica are enjoying dinner.
The pergola is 18 feet wide and 20 feet deep.
The cement is 23 feet wide and 19.5 feet deep.
We made the concrete wider so that the dance floor will be larger and that some of it will have sun for
Noel built the pergola. Matt helped out with some load questions
Oscar helped Noel
Here's a good look at the concrete. Prince and Ben were very interested in what was going on.
Taking a break
Noel convinced us to go up from 8 foot from concrete to bottom of the header to 8 foot 6 inches.
We are really glad we did.
End of day one (May 5th?) of putting it together. The pieces were cut and painted the days before except for the 2x2 bats which were painted (some of the 50) today by Matt, Richard, and Brian.
This night Kathy, Richard, Monica, and Oscar dance under the pergola and it was great!!!!
Here is what the Pergola looked like before the "bats" (the 18 feet long 2" x 2") were put on
On May 25 - 26 Noel put the bats on. He did a great (and fast) job! I did some caulking and sanding.
Kathy did a great job covering the cement before I painted.
On June 1 - 3 I did a final coat of spray paint for the wood that needed it.
The posts, headers, and joists already had 2 coats of primer and a coat of paint rolled on by Monica and Oscar.
Myself and some friends rolled on one coat of primer and one coat of paint on the bats before they were put up.
Dad did a life saver. On June 7th He figured out how the 4 rolls of shade cloth from our 25th wedding
anniversary could be reused as is. We now have shade!! Thanks so much Dad!
So it was finally finished on June 7th.
The planning had started about 2 1/2 months before.
Here's what the shade cloth looks like
The finished pergola with the two new trees.
Here we are celebrating Kathy's birthday on June 6.
Now that we have shade we are planning on eating out a lot more.
