The 2017 Battle to Save the Vineyard
Starting Sunday night Oct 8, 2017 dozens of fires erupted in Napa & Sonoma after high dry winds downed electric lines in many places. The northernmost fire is the 'Pocket' fire (started by Pocket Ranch Road). Our home in the Vineyard Club community is part of this area.
The fire raged for days and first approach our community from the East, and the fire fighters stopped it, then it came from the North, and they stopped it, then on Oct 11th it came from the South and entered into our community from the Gill Creek. It brushed up against houses. I was convinced all our homes would be lost, just like the over 2800 homes in city of Santa Rosa a couple days earlier.
The fire fighters fought very hard for the 3rd time, for the 3rd day in a row. They stopped it, again. Thank you!!!!
Incredible to behold, here is a 747 doing a fire retardant drop on Gill Creek
I doubt we would have been saved it not for the lake, which helicopters could fill giant buckets in seconds and fly 30 seconds to drop them in Gill Creek and return for the next load. Our house is in the tree line immediately above Elliot Ever's tan house behind the helicopter.
Dozers cut fire breaks in the hills.
The smoke is from Gill Creek, just a few feet from the steep hill that enters The Vineyard.
