Jim & Kim's Book Shelves

Jim & Kim have a couple of bookshelves.  One's a double wide like this one and the other is a single.  They'd like one more of each so they can fill up one wall in their front den (living room, home office, etc?)

They'd also like a couple of doors fitted to the bottom sections of all four.

After endless delays with other projects, GG, Easter, etc., it was time to get started!

Speaking of GG, here she is sitting on our back deck wearing Sue's poker hat.

And here we are in the great room. Isaac and Reagan liked getting rides in Gert's walker.

We began the project with four sheets of 3/4" ply, one of 1/2", two of 3/16" and a couple of 1x6 planks.

Here Sue has helped me rip some of it into the side boards, seen here with the dadoes near the edge for the back board.

The cut list included the 4 sides, 2 center uprights, 2 tops, 2 fixed center shelves, 2 bottoms, 2 backs and 12 shelves.

I ripped them all out of the 4x8 sheets using the table saw, with Mom's help, and then cut everything to length with my compound miter saw.

Next I had to add the holes for the shelf pins.  All 240 of them.

I made up a couple of jigs (one upper, one lower) using the drill press and a scrap of ply.

Lining up the edge of the jig with the side boards made all the holes in the right place.

The tape on the drill bit was my depth stop.

When the spinning tape clears the sawdust around the hole, then it's the right depth.

I cleverly arranged the jig's width so that using one edge of the jig gave me the correct set-back for the front row of holes while the other edge of the jig was the correct set-back for the rear set of holes.

And when I needed to switch from the right to left hand sides, I just turned the jig over.

But still, 240 is a lot of holes!

The smaller bookcase carcass went together pretty nicely.

I choose to glue and biscuit it all together.

I can see now though that I don't have enough long clamps to put together the doublewide.

Four more pipe clamps (and pipe) will have to be purchased.

And here is the single standing on it's own.  I installed a shelf to check the fit, perfect of course.  Next the double goes together and then it's custom matching moldings for the front edges and eight doors to go.

NEW PIX, EPISODE 2

And here's some of that custom molding.

The "U" shapped one goes on the center uprights and the "L" shapped one goes on each outside board. All edges got an eighth inch curve except the top of the "L" which got a half inch.

The molding gets glued on, til I ran out of clamps . . .

Here are the two original bookcases.

The bottom and top moldings were replaced with new stuff so that they would match what's being built.

The bottoms were custom while the tops were store bought.

And here are the two new ones complete with moldings and feet.

Now it's on to the doors and shelves.

Have we got a color picked out yet?

Reagan, like all the kids, found a sparkle ball in her basket.

A montage of stills from my video of our egg hunt in the backyard

 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Isaac and Jim, Cody, Bri, Kayla and Reagan, a couple of Reagan running past grandpa, Isaac jumping off the broad stairs under Trav's watchful eye and Isaac climbing the stairs to the upper deck.

Little known by all the kids and grandkids, the Easter Bunny really lives here!

Everyone take care.

UPDATE 3

THE DEED IS DONE

Before the doors can go on we need a top strip for them to close against.

Without this, there would just be a big gap over each door.

We also need a block of wood where each hinge is going to be anchored.

That thin molding ain't gonna cut it.
