Jay & Trav's Basement: 5) Plaster, Paint and Panels
We are still at it. But by the end of this series, you'll see that things are beginning to come together. Here we've put up the first coat of drywall mud. Sue hit the screw holes and I handled the rest.
After the mud we had to sand it all down. The boys popped for a 5" oscillating disk sander or we'd still be at it.
The Pub area starts looking like a nice room.
This shot is from the garage - we created a little nook between the double overhead beams.
I took a couple of hours one afternoon to install an exterior vent for the bathroom fan. Because of the kitchen overhang, the vent cap is located two and a half feet beyond that 2x4 you can see by the ducting.
I added a steel edge and mud to the soffit - a straight soffit.
Here's another shot of the garage side. The old fridge just fits in the 'nook'. And see that armoire against the wall? The boys picked it up, along with a matching table, as materials to make thier bar.
Then there was a second coat of mud, and a second sanding.
I ripped out this part of the bathroom wall because it was badly damaged taking out the vanity, etc. The repair turned out really well.
That's a lot of mud and sanding. Mostly, I made the dust and Sue cleaned it up. But Sue hit all the screw holes and much of the arches.
We had to clean the shopvac's filter many times.
At this time I added six wall mounted electrical boxes - for the vanity light, a smoke dectector and four sconces. I had prewired, of course, and found the appropriate wires right where they were supposed to be.
Wall boxes for two of the Home Theater sconces.
Finally! some paint. I'm rolling on the primer in the Pub. Any blue above is just funky lighting off the primer. In reality, the green wallboard shown through the primer making everything a pale green.
Yep, that's what it looked like.
Even our straight soffit looks better.
Too bad the boys didn't like pale green.
BONUS PIX
In here somewhere was Halloween. Here's my effort for this year. Keep scrolling down for some family pix.
Jimmy brought the grandkids over - here's Isaac in his giraffe costume.
And Reagan as a witch.
Both were in a good mood at the grandfolks.
Isaac and Grandpa.
Reagan' having fun!
Cody and Kayla came over this year too.
The whole family got into the act.
. . . back to work.
Compare this shot with primer to the next one . . .
. . . and a room is born. There are two shades of color - a tan and a darker brown.
The Home Theater and the soffit got the darker color.
As did the Pub room. All the rest was the lighter color. Finally, some visable progress!
The bath is looking good too.
We do good work as sometimes a feathered friend is around keeping a hawk eye on us.
Next Sue put up the wallplates and we added a ceiling to the Pub.
The boys put an upgraded product here and it looks very nice.
Then we added the side brackets to the rest of the areas. Here you can see that we used my laser to keep it all on the straight and level.
The ceiling in this area will be a full eight feet tall - you can see how high up the soffit the channel runs.
The ceiling in the bath will be the same as it had been to match the wall tile.
Here it is going around the bath soffit. Above the soffit you can get a good look at the furnace flue that's being hidden away.
And that's where we are today. To close, here is our last Rose-of-Sharon flower of the year. Everyone take care, really.
